    Well, something, thats for sure.

I mean you can buy a shi it house in a small SK town for a few grand. Then keep my house here as my "cabin" Lol.

I wonder what the residency restrictions actually are.

Maybe a bunch of us Ontarians will have to buy a place in Manitoba or Sask. to keep as an address....I will be talking to my MPP this week to see if there is anything that can be done.....so sick of this idiocy where I get lumped in with some 21 year old in a Skyline because my steering wheel is on the same side......nothing against 21 year olds, but I'm sick of paying for their mistakes....

Still looking, Dominion won't take any new policies for RHD. The trucks are sitting in the driveway.

I'm with Dominion and my broker told me to expect that my Mira turbo will not be renewed come the fall....she wasn't positive, but certain enough that I'm selling it....I just don't have time to deal with it.....the good news is that my Hijet will be renewed/grandfathered...if I leave this company I will prob never get it insured again....haven't heard back from my MPP but his office hinted that they were not really concerned..........so I guess RHD will be legal to own but impossible to drive....I wonder though....Mustangs and Corvettes have a higher risk group than say a Lincoln Town car....yet they both have the steering on the left side...doesn't that make the Town car just as bad a risk???...

We don't have any insurance issues out here in BC. My company didn't even bat an eye when I handed them my papers.

But reading all these stories from you guys in ON I wonder....
Who insures the City owned RHD postal and garbage vehicles????
Seem to be a bit of a double standard.

No one insures public/government vehicles....insurance is nothing more than a guarantee that if the policy holder screws up and causes property damage....the funds are available to cover the damage....insurance companies determine your risk and agree to put up that money if you cause damage...the less likely you are to do any damnage the lower your rates (supposedly)....governments...municipal/provincial/federal..have access to any amount of $$ to cover any loss that could be caused by one of their vehicles...so they need no insurance..they underwrite the risk themselves.

Good point, or a motorcycle for that matter (it's "steering wheel" is on both the left AND right side of the vehicle!).

Just a question, did you guys mention it was RHD when insuring it? I made a point to not volunteer more information than was asked for when talking with insurance and registration. Tell them it's a Subaru Sambar, if they want more details they can use the Google on it. Again, don't lie...but if they don't ask...;) It couldn't be any worse than the studies they do to show the "dangers" of RHD vehicles, eh?

Maybe also emphasize the diminuitive nature of the trucks. Say things like "its engine is half the size of a Smart cars", or "it's a very small work truck, that I'll use to haul small loads for some renovation projects I'm working on". Things that will lead them away from associating import = RHD = teenager in a tin rocket. Perhaps throw the word "cute" in there (no street racer would call their ride cute!) for good measure.

    Possibly good news!

I contacted some other RHD dealers in Ontario. They said Co-Operators is insuring RHD.

I called Co-Op and they said Yup. (Just waiting for the quote to come back though. Maybe today, maybe tomorrow)

Hopefully they arent an arm and a leg. Everyone call co-operators and see!

I just got off the phone with Co-operators in Toronto, and they said they do not wish to cover RHD vehicles. When I asked why, she said that it is just not a market they want to be in. ?????????????????????:frustration:

  10. packrat

I called Co-operators 1-800 number again, and talked to them directly rather than an agent. They told me that Co-operators would not cover RHD, and that facility risk was the only thing se knew of that would. She is getting me a quote, saying that if I have a clean record etc, that the cost shouldn't be that much more than "standard coverage. Now I wait for a reply...........................

    Well,

    I just my quotes.

Not worth it. I can buy another vehicle each and every year for the premiums. I am asking for liability only and see what happens.

Now this is beginning to tick me off to nearly the same level as you. If the next quote is not favourable, MiniBrutes the company is going up for sale if anyone is interested.

    HAHAAAAA

    That was liability ONLY.

1996 Terrano (Nissan Pathfinder) 37yr old driver, clean driving record, drivers education, etc. $3200/yr

1991 Sprinter (Toyota Corolla) 34yr old driver, 1 accident, 1 speeding ticket, no drivers education $1600/yr

(For liability only, I wonder why the big difference in cost..... I guess the Terrano would cause more damage if it hit something?)

$4800 for the pair,, that is WITH multi-vehicle discount.

$400 a month is absurd. A Ferrari is cheaper to insure.

All I wanted to do was to convert these units to WVO to save on fuel. $400 is more than we spend on fuel in a month! (The reason for these units is I wanted 4WD diesel. Not much here in 4WD diesel LHD thats not a 3/4 ton truck!)

I'm out. Minibrutes is for sale. I want to get into the insurance business.

Damn! Thats retarded! I wonder how much the ins companies are getting paid by the govt to push back???? hmmmmmm.

I can't see the government caring one way or the other....the insurance companies did it to motorcyclists a few years ago..and really did a number on bike sales in Ontario..guess it's RHD's turn......the socialist collective at work...I am not an individual able to stand/fall on my own merit,I get judged by the actions of others...you will be assimilated...:frustration:......I also can't understand how no insurance company is seeing the massive business opportunity looking them in the face......specializing in only rhd could make a small company a ton of money.....

Yet right now I am $650 or so for the Carry.

Back in Saskatchewan, I would pay about $650 for the Sprinter and probably $900 for the Terrano - with full coverage.

Right now we pay 191 a month to insure our house, 2004 Suzuki XL7 and 1993 Suzuki Carry.

Oh, and CO-op said no further discount for adding the house.

The semi-good news is there is still a lot of cool LHD vehicles that can be imported, but alas, not in the k-truck market.

We started this business by importing Porsche's and Benz's. Unfortunately they dont make the greatest off road / farm / utility vehicles! Not too mention they arent exactly light on fuel consumption.

I even got house insurance screwed this year....went from $800 a year .which was high, but that was due to no fire hydrant nearby,2 wood burning stoves in the house, and very far from a fire station.....are you sitting down??...my premium went from $800 to $2400:eek::eek:....reason ?...there are a lot of turn of the century wooden cottages renovated to live in year round in my area...they are supposedly very flamable....ok...but my house is a 1950's solid concrete and triple-brick wall construction..what the hell does a turn of the century cottage have to do with me?? there isn't one within a mile of me....doesn't matter..our socialist government allowed them to screw ,what the government considered "privileged" people, because of the area we live in(remember the insurance companies can't raise rates without approval...although in the case of rhd they do have the right to refuse coverage for no reason)....since there is now 13% tax on insurance coverage the Province gets a nice big wad of cash to give out to new immigrants and welfare "baby mommas"..........:frustration::frustration::frustration::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Stronger than ever in Western Canada. No problems in BC, Alberta, Sask & Manitoba. Manitoba leading the way with FULL coverage on a mini truck for less than $900 and 25% cheaper if you have good driving record.

Information update...appears the Ontario government IS RESPONSIBLE for the RHD non insurance issues....in order for an insurance provider to deny coverage they must apply to THE GOVERNMENT with their reasons for wishing to deny coverage..THE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT then can approve and allow them to deny a safe responsible driver insurance coverage on a 100% legal vehicle.....they must also give approval for huge rate increases ...there has to be PROOF of higher than average repair expenses or claim #s per ...talk to your MPP..it's election time...the denial of coverage requests are based on the discredited ICBC RHD attack of a few years ago.....remember there is no Federal or Provincial legislation which allows denial of coverage due to driving position...you can take your old insurance company to court (prob. expensive and pointless) or push your MPP to do the right thing.....I was also advised to look into "fixed value insurance" where a predetermined value is fixed to the vehicle for claim purposes...a buddy recommended it to me but I haven't investigated it as of yet...he was a victim of "fixed value" on his classic all original 1970 Cutlass ..it was wrecked by a drunk driver while parked on a side street and the company only gave him $5000 for a $30k car..because it had been insured cheaply with a "fixed value" of $5k by his father...bad luck for him..possible good for RHD?

Is there a way to take out an insurance bond? Down here you can put some cash, and 'insure' yourself with a bond. I am not sure of the cost but our "private" utility companies do this. As well as UPS trucks....

Well you guys have a big auto manufacturing industry to support in Ontario, so you better sell your economical mini truck and go in debt and buy a brand new vehicle.

Wheee! Buy new now and lose 35% tomorrow!

Part of the reason I came here was the lax on the DOT compliant headlamps. That opened up a lot of custom vehicles without having to find expensive ECE replacements (In many cases dont even exist) or hack the headlights and do some cheesy mod.

Time to look closer at other LHD markets to import from. The problem is that most other markets dont have the quality of vehicles available at 15yrs old. Japan's unique regulations, heavy population and small size make older, low-mileage vehicles in excellent condition very common.

Most other countries, the vehicle is miled out and beat to crap by that age.

    REAL ACTUAL GENUINE GOOD NEWS!

    Here is the Solution:
Call Elaine at Desjardins - 1-866-688-4888 EXT 6442

Quoted under $1900 for FULL coverage for the Sprinter AND Terrano together! (However, I dont drive as much as others. 12,000KM on the Sprinter and 10,000 on the Terrano annually) About $1659 for both for liability only. Although not $50 a month per vehicle, this seems to be one of the most reasonable quotes from Ontario lately!

    They require:
    - Appraisal of vehicle (even if PLPD only)
    - 6+ photos of the vehicle
    - Ontario OAF FORM 1 http://www.fsco.gov.on.ca/english/forms/autoforms/endorsement/1213E.pdf
    - Your money

No problems, no fighting, no complaining, nothing. By far THE MOST PLEASANT company I have talked to since investigating this.

I told her I would be giving out her number and extension. She is VERY NICE.
PLEASE give her a call. If you do, tell her I sent ya!

Now, anyone want to buy my Carry so I can import my Sprinter??!!

If it's Elaine Forester, you might have me to thank for that :p I was looking FOREVER for insurance and found desjardine, went through the whole pictures process you describe. Problem was it took 40 days. In reading this post, I've given her a call to see if I'll be renewed in the coming year.

EVERYONE WHO WANTS INSURANCE MUST GIVE HER A CALL. like an island we'll find refuge if we stick together.

    seriously.

Sorry, I just looked at the extension for the woman I spoke too, different extension.

I must have spoken to Irene Forester, not "Elaine".

    For F'n sakes.....

Sprinter arrived, getting inspected today. Call Desjardins to get the insurance rolling. As of Nov 20, they say they no longer insure RHD!

    What a bunch of BS

yeah, I (may) be still able to get coverage through Dejardin, but only because I applied before they changed their policy. As of earlier today, they are waiting for a senior underwriter to check my VIN numbers and pictures of the trucks (that I have now sent them 3 times). Hopefully I will have coverage within a couple of days. They have told me however, that they will only cover me for one year, but will not renew coverage after that. I have been going through the process with them since July, and as of today still have no coverage. I think the only way to get coverage after that is classic car coverage ie: very restrictive. I wish you luck. I have also heard that GORE is still offering comercial coverage, but they were who I was initially covered by, and they dropped me on renewal last May for no0rmal coverage. If I get coverage, I will drive my trucks for the year, then drive them out west:frustration:

The worst part here: The car was in Canada in late September! Due to slowness clearing customs, I missed my trucker's schedule and it sat there over a month. It woulda been here before that if the customs clearance went better.

Its easier and cheaper for someone with several DUI's to get insurance than RHD. Jeez, I knew Ontario sucked before I moved here, but I didnt know it was this bad. (And I am not just talking RHD insurance, I am talking life in general) Health coverage was a pain in the ass.
Ontario doesnt let safeway give airmiles for meds? MY wife is on a pile of drugs and in Sask we got tens of thousands airmiles. ZIPPO in Ontario.

I sure dont want to move back to Sask, but sheet, this province p's me off on a nearly daily basis.

    You are correct..

You can purchase a bond in Canada, a friend of my daughter knows a fella who has done this... it only costs a MILLION dollars... I'd give up my carry before I'd spend a million to drive it.

All you guys are still here chirping about insurance issues, I told you guys who insures me and also a buddy of mine. Their home office is in Ontario and they are reasonable as well, the only thing is they won't insure kei vehicles for commercial purposes.

Zardos, I contacted your supplier back in June when my coverage was Canceled by GORE. They told me they were taking no more RHD vehicles. Maybe they will continue an existing policy, but it doesn't help us.
