:):) After months of back and forth with the DMV, they have decided to register KEI vehicles for the street using the feds 25 years or older law that exempts them from restrictions.
thanks to the much appreciated effort of Shaun @ DMV, i now can drive my suzuki cappuccino and daihatsu hijet jumbo legally on the street as collector vehicles.

David: Did the DMV make you use the 25 Y/O antique / collector rules OR did you choose to (as I did) ?? I could have done a standard registration BUT there was no reason to & would have been over 10X more expensive !!

Harley, we had to use the 25 year rule to register our trucks. the subaru sambar van and the suzuki cappuccino are registered as regular passenger vehicles, they had delaware titles.

Dave, can you PM all the details of how you were able to get this done?
I've contacted the DMV on several occassions and no one there would confirm I could get one titled, and basically scared me from buying a recently imported vehicle...
I'd appreciate it more than you can imagine!

"Is This Street Legal?" "Can I get Title/Plates/Registration?" "My Grandmother's Sister's Mailman said these are not legal on the streets" - Finally finished a page explaining it all - Facts, not opinions. I ask that you PLEASE read and PLEASE comment, PLEASE post questions. https://unusual-auto.com/street-legal

As long as the vehicle is 25 years old (1993 or older) it can be registered with collector plates. I was ASSURED that we would not have any problems in the future with registering a KEI vehicle.
it might help if the vehicle has a US title from any state but its not necessary. My car had a Delaware title and the truck had a Japanese title.
The people at the DMV are now aware of the situation and it has been documented so i was told. GOOD LUCK!

Or, you could move to Canada. They have a 15 year import law.

I am interested in one of these trucks. Is there anyone in Wisconsin that would be interested in getting together so I could see their truck?

There seem to be a bunch of street legal/titled 1998 Era kei trucks for sale recently
    Hijet, Acty, Carry

not sure which would get the best mpg and be the most reliable as I really haven’t followed mini trucks in a decade, sheesh it took a long time to get the state to recognize federal law.

now time to see if any of these are reliable and have fuel injection, all are 4wd which is unfortunate for my use and $8000 which seems higher than I remember

    ah well

If you don't need 4wd then just order a 2wheel drive!
I am sure they would be cheaper
Suzuki is efi in 99 and a complete new body style in 01
In 01 The Carry got the famous K660, which is a much more powerful motor
It is chain driven instead of belt and can be bout 80 HP (not the 40 hp of the 90's)

  21. What we need is the States to ignore Federal law and just let people drive them all. It's absurd that a 25 year old minitruck is allowed on the roads, but not the modern versions with lane departure warning, smart assist collision avoidance, eco IDLE, airbags, sign recognition etc. After all, if the States can ignore Federal law regarding drugs, then they should be able to re: mini trucks. It's a little nutty when you think about it! Motorcycles and even bicycles are allowed on most public roads!

Hey, you must be happy that you’ve made it through the twists and turns of the DMV! Big thanks to Shaun for pulling it off, your Suzuki and Daihatsu Hijet Jumbo SPU can now legally roam the roads as collector cars. It also eases the work for equipment traders as they can legally trade these mini trucks. It’s time to go for a ride with those tiny legends!

What year? I am looking at a 2024 Hijet deck van, but am being told that it can't be titled in WI.
