Just did the radio/speaker swap on my 89 and I'm really happy with these Pyle speakers, especially because they're super shallow so they fit in the door with no alterations needed to the door card and no spacing to clear the window, just bolt right in. Decent sound, not too pricey, and they're waterproof to boot: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FSSHTFH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 The housing on them actually kind of wedges into the door, you could almost skip the screws.
What radio did you use? Kinda hard for me to swap the old one out because it just fits look of the truck. Looking for something with at least a USB port.
I know, I really struggled with those aftermarket radios. I ended up using this one which is really common: https://www.ebay.com/itm/311824779172 I taped it off and painted all the silver bits with a matte black to make it less noticeable. It works well for the price, usb and bluetooth work great. I think some on this forum have found stock honda or acura radios that work if you've got the time for that.
wow, and that for US $19.99. Did the radio fit into the original slot with the original bracket at the rear? Or did you have to make some modifications?
Any Mechless Single DIN radio should work in the mini trucks. The radios with mechanicals, (tape, cd, etc.) are generally too deep to fit in the space available.
There’s a rubber strip around the face of the old clarion unit - I used some double stick tape to adhere it to the new one and just used the stereo bracket that came with the radio, fit tidily without the original mount. I’m waiting for it to start rattling but it hasn’t budged yet. That said, if you want to use the stock mount, you have to tap the back of the radio, it doesn’t have any threaded holes in the back.
I recently did a simple setup with my acty. KENWOOD X2c speakers and a KMM-X704. Though I prob could have gone with the X3c speakers. I was just worried with the lack of space. I laser cut some spacers to mount the speaker correctly and used some killmat. Looking back I'm still pleased and would not change much.
I have an aftermarket Kenwood “single DIN” CD head unit in mine and it fits fine. There actually seems to be a lot of space behind it, and it’s not actually mounted to anything (perhaps the bracket has been removed?) even without it being physically mounted it doesn’t rattle around at all.
As for speakers I’ve been considering getting g a 3 way component system and flush mounting tweeter in the dash near the A pillar. And after market under dash speaker box would likely do well but I’m not sure yet. I’ve also considered using some powerful magnets to mount the speaker box as to avoid damage and make it easy to remover when needed. I’ve also been toying with the idea of using the shelf space under the glove box to mount a custom sub enclosure. Another possibility for mounting speaker could be the tunnel cover between the dash and an automatic gear selection. Anyone have thoughts on this?
