Choke Stuck Closed - 1991 Daihatsu HiJet Minitruck

    New member here. My problem with bogging down, running rich, and no takeoff power has been traced back to the gears on the choke mechanism on the carb. It is stuck to where the flap is in the closed position, and it will not release as the truck warms up. I have watched a great Youtube on the same problem but the movie never seemed to disclose how this was fixed.

    I have sprayed it with some PB Blaster hoping that it will free up. No change after a couple of days. The only way to get her to run normal is to unscrew the choke flap adjustment screw until it releases pressure and lets the wheel roll back (open carb). I am basically removing the choke mechanism but not allowing the screw to fall out. This will obviously prevent cold starts and various other issues if I settle for this. My question is, how do I permanently fix a stuck choke mechanism? I will also add that there is a vertical spring that somehow works with the gear and I believe it is what triggers the wheel to move. It doesn't seem to be doing its job, but I am not sure how to address. I have hears about the wax pellet heating up, sensors and various other components but do not understand where they are located.

    Lastly, the truck has had the carb cleaned (and reassembled -- could have been source of problem), new fuel filter, plugs, distributor cap, and wires. These seem to be in working order. THANKS for any help!

    Check for vacuum leaks that's what happened to mine

    You mention the carb was cleaned & reassembled. Go to a detailed diagram of the linkages concerned. It sounds as if something is not assembled in the right order and may be causing your malfunction. Or as has been mentioned, These carbs are very dependant on correct vacuum to function correctly.

    I have looked into this. This doesn't seem to be the issue. Or I do not see/hear a leak. Thanks for trying.

    Mine only cracked on the inside rubber at first glance they looked fine

    If it was me I would replace all the vacuum lines with silicone tubing then work from there. I always try to start with the cheapest, easiest things and work up from there. There have been way too many cases where the owner heads straight to the carb. and never gets it running right again without buying a new carb.$$$$$.
