in the nose of the starter is the pinion gear that should pop out when the solenoid gets power..there should be 2 + terminals on the solenoid(actually 3 but the one isn' t supposed to get direct power)... ground is through the starter/solenoid body...the power from the solenoid gets transferred to the starter once the solenoid pops the toothed pinion gear forward(so the pinion isn't spinning until it comes in contact with the flywheel)...if you hook the + to the wrong bolt/terminal on the solenoid then power will go straight to the starter...the keyswitched wire to the small + terminal on the solenoid is the one that will power the solenoid to pop the pinion out which then makes the final crossover connection for the main power to the starter motor...to test both the starter and solenoid both the large battery terminal (bolt on) and the small terminal (usually a push in connector or smaller bolt on wire) need + power....as previously stated there are 2 large terminals on the solenoid and 1 small...the outer large terminal needs direct power not the one closest to the starter body..you have the correct one of the 2 largest, if the starter doesn't spin when you hook + power to it...then jump power from that terminal to the smaller terminal(the solenoid plunger power)..that should jump the solenoid out and make contact for the main starter circuit....
