The trucks with 5 gears do not have a hi and low option Is the 5th gear an extra low gear? or is it an extra high gear or is it dependent upon the truck? The trucks with 4 gears have a hi and low option Generally if the 5th gear is a high gear a 5 gear truck would be best for the city roads/highways? Generally if the truck has 4 gears with hi/low the truck would not quite be as good on a highway but MUCH better in the off road? Am I correct in making these assumptions or does it work a little differently?
Nope! Older Suzuki's with 5 speed is actually a 6 gear with an extra low granny. No H/L with the older 5 speed suzuki's. Mitz, and Daihatsu can and do have H/L with 4 and 5 speed trans. Gearing and roads comment is correct with stock diameter tires. Increase to bigger tires and remember that power will be lost with the higher gear and taller tires. Here's my thoughts. H/L for offroad use. Remember you double the gears with that selection. And if you are going with taller tires then you really don't care about that 5th gear because you just picked it up with the taller tires.

Combinations 92-98 Suzuki DD51T: = 4spd with hi/low gear (located seperately on the 2wd/4wd lever) = 5spd = 5spd with extra low gear AKA "EL" (located directly on the shifter), these ones are sometimes referred to as "6spd" All 3 models have selectable 4wd. Top speed on 4spd is around 80km/h where as the 5spd you can get up to about 90km/h safely.
I have a 92' carry 4spd and it has no problem hitting 110kph stock tires and a 3" lift. goes a little faster downhill with the wind...lol
but is it screaming? mine will do about 85 happily, but any faster and you can tell its working. I COULD get her to hit 100, but... she dont like it. Do you have larger tires too doddy?
With 14's your gonna need a bigger downhill to get your 110 kph I only went up to 13's and lost a piece of my top end for sure, best I can do now (by the speedo) is a little less than 105... and man oh man does the little truck ever HUM with four new snowies on her LOL z
I would like to build a rack in the back that locks so i can swap street wheels vs off road. it would be nice to have a set for each, and an impact with a decent jack.
5 speed and stock tires I have a 1994 DD51T with a 5 speed and she will do 115 on the flat. That is if the wind is not blowing. LOL. In Wyoming the wind allways blows. If I catch a tail wind I don't notice the hills so much. Any head wind or a hill is VERY noticable! I have tried looking into a 1989-2004 geo metro 1000cc 3 cylinder and found one but untill I can find out for sure that the block is the same, I won't buy it. If anyone has done this conversion I would sure like any information you could share. Jeff
Or you could just get DOT ATV tires like I did and then you can go offroad and onroad with the same set of wheels If you want to lock a set of wheels in the back you can just make a simple rack and then use a chain with a padlock... and I believe there are a few guys who have made bumpers that double as air tanks. Not sure how safe that is but...

Check out my build/adventure thread... the company is EFX they have two types of DOT certified ATV tires. One is super aggressive and 26" so not really suited for the "average" mini truck. I'm using their 24x10R14 tires. They aren't the most amazing trail tires but they do all right in the mud and are reasonable on the road too. My Build Thread
But alas, they are bias ply.. I drive my truck every day, so i need something that is going to last. I guess i'm just stuck with the winter tires. That wheel and tire combo on your truck is sick though. I would really like to have something similar on mine.
