Ok I have a 1986 diahatsu hijet. I have removed the clip from the tranny to shift to high gear and works great. I have also unscrewed the govenor from the Speedo input and screwed the Speedo cable straight in so that I dont cut off at 25mph. That works fine. Problem I am having is I need more power. As far as I know this truck is bone stock. For instance, going up the slightest incline on the road and I am unable to get it to turn up enough rpms to shift to 4th gear. It's like there's something holding it back. Can you guys tell me what all performance upgrades I can do to this truck to get the most out of it I can? Thanks in advance.
Well it only has 32000 miles on it, from what I've been looking around online that isn't a lot. This is my first mini though so I'm not really sure if it is or isn't. Can I run better plugs? If so what do you recommend? Also better coil? Filter? Would love to upgrade the carb if possible. Like I said I don't know what I can do because it's my first venture with these trucks. Any information would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
Keep in mind that 550cc's converts to about 33.3 CID. Just sayin, I don't know what you are used to driving but I'm sure it has a lot more cubes than your new ride. Where I live, my 660 has plenty of spunk for regular traffic flow. Fred
Where all the 86 model s80 550cc? Reason I ask is because I read somewhere that the US imported ones had left hand steer and more cc's. I'm not sure if what I was reading pertained to mine but in any case mine is left hand steer.
Mine is a 2002 K6A (ChainDriven DOHC) which replaced the F6A(BeltDrivenSOHC) which was used for most of the 90s and that replaced the F5A which is what you have. I think this is correct going just off the top of my head and sometimes fuzzy memory bank. Fred
I think all the S80's are 550 cc, mine is a '93 and it is.The only other mod I've done is 14" wheels and tires which give you a little more top speed but no help on grades. A lot of guys want more power but that turns into a big project and very few of them happen. The uni body is not real easy to modify and they are just too small. In my opinion this small stature is both a blessing and a curse.
Need to apologize. For some reason I did not recognize the fact that the vehicle being discussed is a Diahatsu and I was thinking Suzuki. As I mentioned, sometimes these old memory banks do not function properly. Fred
