So, what is required to import a vehicle from USA to Canada? I'm looking at some Gen 1 Dodge/Plymouth minivans with the 5 speed turbo. One in particular does NOT have a title because it was from a police auction. I know there is some 3 day notice for plate-able vehicles but if its salvage there is no problem.

Well, you have to send the signed off title and bill of sale to US Customs for their export stamp before it can leave the US .... Theoretically, Canada Customs won't allow the vehicle in unless you have the US Customs export stamp on the title ....

When you import a car from the states you need to get the manufacturers recall notice ,that states what recalls have applied to that vehicle and whether the repairs were completed..this has to come from the manufacturer and is simple to get unless the car is a BMW or MERCEDES..they will NOT give the recall sheet out without a huge hassle and some $$$..all other manufacturers do this for free...you need to tell the US customs where you will be crossing the border and you need to give them 72 hours to check the vin to see if it is stolen etc. You also must fax a copy of both sides of the ownership/title to the US customs at the crossing you will be using..you will only be allowed to bring the vehicle through the border point that has the paperwork, and some of them only allow importing on certain days..some allow it 24-7,so make sure to check..You then arrive after 72 hours to that crossing and they will stamp the title saying it has been cleared (no charge)..you then go to the Canada customs and declare the vehicle and pay the duties...if it has air-con there is an additional $100 for air tax even if it doesn't work...you need a copy of the bill of sale or the Ebay aution # if it was on Ebay..they will check the auction end price so don't try to fudge it (don't ask how I know this:eek::eek:)...you will also pay the registrar of imported vehicles fee of around $200 which includes the paperwork and the cost of the compliance inspection (Canadian Tire is the RIVs inspector)...Dats all there is to it..check the transport Canada website to make sure the vehicle is admissible as there are some that can not be made to comply (1980s T-birds and some Tauruses come to mind)
