Is there a set time or mileage that the timing belt should be changed? I assume that these are interference engines.(pistons smash valves if belt breaks)

60,000 miles/100,000 klms is what my suzuki engine manual says.

6 yrs is what shows in the 550 manual and i have blown belts with no damage to the engine(550).

there's a table of service intervals in the general section of the manual. I uploaded a few sections of the manual to a "box" account. It should give you some general guidelines.
