When I go above 35 MPH, the steering wheel violently shakes. Otherwise the steering is fine. Any idea what could be the issue?

Especially check the tie rod ends for slop. Those and the lower arm inner bushings, and the ball joints.

If the rod end or ball joint rubber dust boots have gone the parts themselves will age real quick.

It's most likely your syering stem bushing. Be careful, if you buy a cheep chinese copy, it wil last you
    6 month.ben there , done that.
It's the bushing inside the arm bolted to the frame pivot.

+1 on that, definitely worth checking... although I've only ever seen one go bad, it did those same symptoms.

Shuffled my wheels and it worked for me otherwise you need to have those joints and bushings checked.
