First post here. I’m having an issue I’ve narrowed down to the carb choke, where during warmup up my 91 Honda Acty runs fine but will eventually idle up and choke itself out. I’ve replaced both carb solenoids, torn down and cleaned it, rebuilt the carb and still seem to have the same issue. Truck runs fine when warm burns choking itself out after maybe 10 mins during warm up. Truck runs too well when hot for it to be the ICM. When the truck starts to sputter and stall if pushing in the gear circled in the photo, it will hold and is fine. I am trying to figure out what controls the circle mechanism. I have hit the end of google and am running out of ideas. I’m going to pull the carb again but anyone else have this issue that may be able to assist?
right by that gear is the gray cycliner with two hose connection, inside that is bees wax. as it heat up from the hot water running thought it , the bees wax expands, pushing the piston out, moving the gear to open the choke. watch that has the truck warms up, and let us know what is happening. there is a lot more to all of it. there is a vaccum pull off, full throttle pull off, and springs that might be broke. In my option the choke mechanism is most complex part of this carburator.
Thanks, Bert. I did take the carb thermostat out and tested it, seems to be working , however to your point, I am going to pull the carb again and take a more in-depth look at the choke mechanism. I’ll let you know what I come across!
I was having some cold start/warm up issues on my 98 and wasn't sure what it was. Of all the ways to figure it out I was doing the water pump and timing belt and in the process pulled the alternator for better clearance, in the process I pulled a few vacuum hoses out of the way and one of the connection points on the 3 way set on top of the intake broke. I used some JB steel sick to plug it and temporarily tapped the line with a T connector into one of the other ports and it fixed the issue. I ordered new one and switched it all back and still working great. In short double check for vacuum leaks. In my case the connector was likely cracked and leaking to begin with and I didn't know it and it broke because it was already cracked and by chance it sorting out my idle/warm up issue. Good luck and hope you figure it out.
So I didn’t end up having any vacuum leaks, however I did replace the slow cut control unit under the dash and it seems to have fixed my issue. Was able to source one from Japan and haven’t had issues since installing it. Thanks everyone, for leaving some tips and tricks.
