Springs

Hi all, what springs are everyone running in their 90s Acty?

I changed out mine for some that are 10.5 long and with a 275lb spring rate.

The truck is now undrivable as there is no suspension travel at all and it bangs and crashes over even fractional bumps in the road. I’m used to stiff suspension, but this is unreal.

I’m thinking about using some 200lb ones to bring a bit of comfort in (I know it’s never gonna drive like a high-end Lexus).

Any help or comments would be massively appreciated!

    Cheers!

  2. since you already have the new springs and they are liner just grind off 2 in of vertical height off the spring to see if you can get in that sweet spot for the shock.

If you cut the springs active coils it will just increase the spring rate. I know for my Every van the stock springs are ~160lb.

Your spring rate is fine, but you have too much preload. I'm running 50 Newton, 285 lb springs, they are just 250mm long (9.8"). I consider the ride to be very good and it uses most of the suspension travel. Your 10.5" spring has an additional 193 lbs of preload over my 250mm springs.

Did you replace you bumpstops? And mechanical bangs are because the bumpstops are shot, or gone. I built a thread on what I did.

Hi, I've just received some springs from summit racing. They're 225lbs and 10" long. I'll be taking it down to my garage for them to fit. I'll get them to have a look at everyone's suggestions while they're doing it. Thanks for all your replies and suggestions :)

I changed my front springs out over a year ago and have been super happy with the results. Best Mod for an Acty in my opinion.

I went with a set of QA1 10HT275 High Travel Coil-Over Springs. 10 inch, 275lb Rate from Speedway Motors. This was over a year ago, but at the time, with shipping to a Pacific Island, came to $123 for 2.

Haven't bottomed out, much better ride. Easy enough to change out.

Bumping this up to see what people have landed on for springs.

I recently did the QA1 high travel 10HT/225/475 progressive rate spring from Summit, with the intent of adding a plow at some point. That dream has faded as I haven’t found it necessary. Now finding that the progressive rate might be hindering my ride comfort.

I get the sense on larger bumps in the road rather than absorbing the load it’s launching the cab.

I am tempted to swap it out for a 225# linear spring probably try an Eibach. Curious what others experiences have been with swapping springs.

I put on 10" 275 lb chromies from summit. no trimming and added the 2" lift i needed up front with the extended shackles on the rear. ride is sturdy on and off road and can still handle heavy loads at 50 mph. I also feel the random death wobble at full speed with an empty truck is noticeably lessened, Oh I added new bumpstops at the top of the struts too.

So I went out and took measurements of the stock springs, and it’s pretty obvious that the optimal fit is a metric spring.

I’ll be using Swift 70mm ID, 10” long, 4K springs (225#) which should fit perfectly in the spring perch. Wouldn’t expect any lift, and should ride very smooth.

I’ll probably just post the progressives up for sale if anyone intends to add a plow to their Kei. They ride quite nice 90% of the time, which is why I wasn’t bothered by them until I drove to work. I lost some of the travel I had going over huge bumps at speed, like the train tracks. Which I have no problem slowing down for, but it’s a 50mph highway and I’m stopping traffic down to 10 and as we know it doesn’t exactly just pick right back up to speed lol.

This is most likely lack of rebound damping, either by design or from wear.

Yup, I feel like with the progressive rate spring I am well above what the strut can control when unloaded. The struts themselves are still in great shape, but I do believe these are primarily used for those that add a big front-end load like a plow and require that increased rate. These just don't really jive with my trucks usage. I wanna jump the train tracks dammit! :p Also it snows here maybe a week out of the year, so the plow has become less and less necessary.
