Radiator hose top or bottom?

    Hey guys I did something stupid......

    On my 02 Carry I had the radiator out & didn't take pictures before hand.

    So when you are looking at the 2 pipes that turn into hoses from the front of the truck....

    Which one goes to the bottom of the radiator & which one goes to the top?

    Does it matter?

    I went with a completely different radiator & gotta make all new hoses...
    Someone told me that if you got them in the wrong place it wouldn't circulate correctly, so checking with you faithful for the correct info.

    Hello, I have a 1999 and believe the same engine. Looking from the front, the pipe on the left goes to the bottom, right to top. Those same pipes going to the rear of the vehicle are: left goes to the block (water pump? It's a bit obscured) and right goes up top to the thermostat housing. Hope this helps.

    That's exactly what was wanting to know/confirm.

    Now just gotta get adapters & new hose.

    Another way to think about it is the hot water goes in the top, so it can flow down the radiator to be cooled. Hot usually comes out of the hose connected to the tstat. Just basic water cooled stuff.

    thats what had me thinking it was the other way around...

    all my regular vehicles have the thermo on the "top" side & the hose from them goes into the top of the radiator.

    guess the thermo loacation is all about which way the water circs?

    Yeah so the tstat is located on the hot side of the water pump and thats how it regulates the coolant temps. So on start up its is closed and coolant heats up in the engine. When it gets hot, the tstat opens and allows the hot coolant to flow to the radiator to get cooled down. All the cars I've worked on the hot side goes to the top of the radiator so that gravity pulls it down to get cooled.

    So I am looking to Add capacity to my system with a rear heat exchanger over the gas tank!
    Witch direction does the heater hoses flow?

    It got pretty confusing didn't it? Lol

    So my take (which means nothing) is that it draws from the bottom of the radiator which is the hose on the left if you are standing in front of the truck....

    For you in particular? If you are just adding extra water volume? Why wouldn't you just tap into the heater core hoses? They are much easier to get to in the front & ad a T.

    Extra thought for you: you don't really need to go to the rear. If your truck is like mine? There is a ton of room right there to just go to a bigger radiator like I did. The radiator I got is about 30% bigger volume over all. Just had to make some brackets & fight the hose thing. But it is working perfect now.

    @KCCats Why do you need more capacity? Is you're motor running hot?

    I am planning on using the heater hoses, that is my question
    Which way do they flow?
    The top is out and the bottom is return?
    I am a Plumber I specialize in Hydronic heating.
    I over heat in the winter with the plow on!
    I have twin electric fans on a separate temp control.
    I am planning to take Pex back to above the Gas tank and add a heat exchanger
    with another fan, I already have a 80 amp alternator, so no problem.

    wow man!

    i plow with mine & havent had any trouble with overheating with this new radiator & it only has a single 10" fan on it.

    not sure what to tell you here... but for sure if you run pex back there that will be a neat set up to see.

    cant really give you a better answer than what we already said.

    on my truck the fittings change fixed all the leaks.

    After thinking about this some more I have a theory on why you overheat with the plow.

    The plow is blocking critical air flow into the radiator and/or actually causing a low pressure area behind it and in front of the radiator.

    You could try putting an air scoop on top of the plow with the output in front of the radiator. Easier that adding a second radiator I would think.

    Yes that is exactly what is going on
    I would love to upgrade the OEM radiator as well
    Do you have a link?
    I looked and the small heat exchanger I have 'Could' stand upright to allow air flow,
    instead of another fan?

    Also I see you have the 02 EFI
    What kind of power difference is there,
    from my F6a?
    I have been waiting and wanting a 01 for that motor / body style!
    It is now 25 years old and can be titled and licensed like my 91!

    I really would love a better radiator, please give me an idea where to start.

    I have decided to just interrupt the heater hose on the return side.
    No T's just come out of the heater core and go to the rear and back into the return.
    Guess I will have to refill the radiator and crank it over to see where it comes out LOL

    ok back to my original idea
    Just adding T's into the line!
    If I interrupt the line coming back to the engine
    I will have to have my heater fully on hot
    To get any flow at all!

    OK I put a 1/2" pex T into the heater core lines
    Ran back to above the rear diff, and added a heat exchanger thumbnail (3).jpeg
