Play in strut at top

Well I have been replacing all the worn front end parts in order to eliminate a front end shake. Thought I had it under control when I found play at the top of the drivers side strut. I have never worked on a strut and don't really know what to expect.
When I jack the drivers side tire off the ground try to move the tire up and down it moves about 1/4" or more up and down at the top of the strut. When I move the tire side to side the top of the strut does move a little side to side, enough to make you think it's got bad tie rod ends. All 4 tie rod ends are new. New lower ball joints. New idler arm bushing. So it is not them.
I do have a lift kit installed so I can't see the nut on top of the strut to see what it is doing.
Guess I am trying to figure what parts I would need to rebuilt the top area of the strut.
BTW the spring and the shock part of the strut seem to be OK.
