I have a 1996 suzuki carry and was trying to put 14 inch wheel and tires on it.After I installed them it rode great and the gear ratio was a lot higher.I was trying to drop the rpm at higher speeds. At around 50 mph the front end would shake out of control. The tires were balanced twice trying to correct this problem but nothing worked.I was wondering if anyone has had this problem.Maybe to heavy of a tire or bad strut.please help with info:frustration:

have you tried switching the wheels around? move the fronts to the back? if you have a bent rim it will certainly make the front end shake worse that it would in the rear. that would at least help you narrow down the problem. i would also listen to the tires going down the road, maybe there is a flat spot in the tread that you didn't see or a bubble in the tread

    Ball joint maybe?

Does it have a "lift" kit in it? Has the toe in been checked?
On further thinking are you sure the rims are seated properly on the hub?
If the bore hole on the rim is to small for the hub - even a fraction, it will not sit
properly on the hub. And if the bore hole on the rim is larger than the hub it is just
the lugs centering the rim and that could cause problems as well.
Please list exactly what 14" rims you are using, aftermarket or oem [Nissan, Honda, etc]

Thanks for the replies,I did swap the front and rear tires, also checked the balljoints, tierods, steering rack also had the tires checked out.I used rims off a ford escort,no lift installed yet.I was wondering how I could check to see if the struts are bad.Maybe the tires are to heavy for the smaller struts.I did put the stock wheels back on and it dosen't shake anymore but it turns to many rpm's when driving on the roads here in mississippi.Oh also checked the front alignment it was perfect.

if your struts are bad you can jump on the bumper and the truck will bounce up and down with spring pressure but with "resitance". it will just go up and down with no dampening effect. i would follow up on what tripper said and check that you rim is sitting flush against you disc/drum, and centered.

According to post by Tom's Mini Trucks the Escort rims 91-97 have a center bore of 54.1mm so your hub should be 54mm to fit correctly as I see it.

Jamie, what is the verdict, did you find the problem?

Does anyone know what he did to fix it? I am having the same problem. With the 12" street tires the truck will drive smooth as can be to 65mph no problem, but with the 13" mud tires you cant break 35. I cant figure it out.

    thanks,

you haven't got the power to exceed 35mph? or it shakes too much to exceed 35mph?

No, it just feels like it wants to shake itself apart at 35. With the 12" tires it is not a problem at all to do about 65.

have you checked everything suggested above? rim fit against the drum/hub? tie rods, ball joints, camber, caster, toe-in/out? are the rims bent? are the tires seated properly on the rims? what tire pressure are you running? i don't think there is a magic answer, just a lot you have to inspect.

Did an alignment, balanced wheels, re-seated the rim about 4 times to see if it wasnt seated correctly, got new lugs because I thought the other lugs werent seating the rim correctly, checked tie rods. It is 2wd so not to much up front.

it may be the offset of the rims? if they stick out a lot further than the stock rims they will put a different load on the wheel bearings and cause a shake as well.

Hmmmm didnt think of that. They do stick out a little further, but I really didnt think about that because they are wider tires. I need to check the rim type to get some info from it. I just bought the truck. Pic is below.

isn't that greg's old truck? i don't remember him complaining about a shake in the front end, i thought he just didn't like those tires on the street? hmmmm

Yea it is. Really nice guy. He didnt use these tires on the street, but I want to use them. With the tires he was using I have no problems, but with these I do. Like I said I have re-seat them a few times, and had them balanced.

if i'm not mistaken those really aren't for road use? they aren't DOT approved and by design may pose problems... what you might try is airsoft bb's. a lot of guys use those on the really big tires like 35" and bigger super swampers that are impossible to balance. just google it something like airsoft bb's for tire balance and you will get a lot of hits. the trick with the bb's in there is they are constantly adjusting and will work better than a dynamic high speed balance machine.

one more thing to add... those tires won't last very long on the street. you'll probably have them bald in less than 10,000 miles.

Thanks googling now. I know they wont last long. I dont drive the truck much. Just to like the store really quick or to lowes about 2 miles away. It's not my daily driver. I just would like to be able to get it up to 35mph without it shaking itself apart plus the problem is driving me mad!!!
