New performance mufflers

    My muffler has a nice hole in it so it will need to be replaced sometime in the future. Does anyone have any recommendations for easy and compatible mufflers for a 1990 HH3? It would be nice to find one that increases performance (less restrictive).

    Run a straight pipe if you want more performance however if your not turbo’d, don’t expect much. From what I hear, the cat is the most restrictive part of the system due to the down sizing in pipe and honey comb design inside. Remove the cat if you can and if you need a new muffler, replace it with a straight through style muffler or straight pipe.

    I’ve seen some posts about removing the cat and running a straight pipe. My acty does not have a turbo on the engine so I’m not sure if removing the cat and running a straight pipe would be worth the extra noise. But I definitely want to look into it and experiment. I don’t have any experience with mufflers or the exhaust system but do you know how one would connect a straight pipe? Are there places to bolt it on? How does it connect after the cat is removed. Also, is there a way to put a turbo on the e07a engine? Or were you talking about the acty engines that come with a turbo?

    Any exhaust mods I’ve done in the past on other vehicles have been done at exhaust shops. Having your pipes welded is a good way to make sure you have no exhaust leaks. If a shop were to remove both the cat and muffler, they can weld back a piece of straight pipe of the same size as your old cat and put a “straight through” design muffler in the place of the old muffler. To keep the sound stock, put back a decent size muffler. The shop should have a good idea what size muffler would be a good idea. Stay away from mufflers with baffles as they do not flow as good and are loud (flowmaster). This should cost less than 400 dollars so don’t get ripped off. Shop around locally. Adding a turbo will require some fab work and I would say take it to a shop unless you have some welding skills. Probably not worth paying to have it done to be honest.

    Thanks for your input, I figured adding a turbo wouldn’t be so easy haha.
    As for the muffler I was hoping to do it myself though I do not have access to a shop or any welding experience. I’m was hoping it was something that could be removed and replaced with a few bolts.

    On another note, would a cold air intake be as difficult as the turbo? Or would that be less challenging to add.

    I would leave the stock air filtering system as it is because you won’t see any gains being your not turbo’d. Unless you increase the size of the high jet in your carb, increasing air flow won’t achieve much. It’s a 660cc engine, it is what it is lol.

    So far I’ve ive done all the work on my acty so I’m going to try and keep the ball rolling haha save a little cash and learn something at the same time. It’s a fun little project. I have a nice loooooong list of things that need to be looked at haha

    Best of luck! I haven’t purchased a mini truck of my own but I’m going look at one in the near future and I’m trying to learn as much as possible about these trucks before I do anything. Ideally I’m looking for something with as little work to be done as possible.

    Unfortunately, I think since these trucks and vans are so old, there is going to be a fair amount of work to be done. Aside from the small tune up I’ve done when I got my van (spark plugs, wires, air filter, oil filter, fuel filter, spark plug wires, distributor cap) I’ve had/have a couple of major issues with the cooling system. There is a LOT of gunk in the coolant hoses that I believe has been corroded from the metals in the engine over time. Also some of my cooling metal pipes have also cracked and leaked(I had to fabricate a custom repair). I still need to take a look at the carb because my van seems to be running rich and shooting out some smoke upon the start. I also have to take a look at the tie rods and suspension, etc. There’s a lot of little things haha

    Leave the air intake as is, that is in fact a cold air intake and works well.

    If that air valve is not working properly, the fuel / air ratio is not correct and you will have too much fuel and not enough air.

    Hey shogun,

    thanks for the info! I’ll leave the intake in as I didn’t know it was a cold air intake haha

    I did see your posts about the solenoids before but I figured I would try cleaning the carb first since I figured it would be absolutely filthy. I’ll definitely check out the solenoids after your recommendation. Do you know any easy ways to clean the carb? I’ve seen in the past your post about cleaning the carb but the link was in Japanese and somewhat difficult to follow.

    Thanks for the muffler info! I’ll definitely need to get working on one soon as I’m not sure it will pass the state inspection with a hole in it haha

    The major projects I want to work on is the cooling system, the carb, and the muffler.

    My cooling system has a lot of debris inside of it. I had a lower radiator hose burst on me a couple of weeks ago. When taking the hose off, I found lots of debris inside of the hose. This was after flushing the system with water and a cooling system flushing chhemical
