1990 suzuki carry 660cc ..was driveing home the other night at 90kmh roughly and got the feeling something wasn t right ..just felt odd.sure enuff 2 min later it started getting warmer ..almost redline when i pulled over ..let it cool for 5 min or so temp only came down to 3/4 ..limped it home ..last 1/2 mile home i put it in 2ncd gear reved it up ..30-35kmh pulled into driveway to see the temp drop back to norm ..did a few short runs around home the temp stays normal..checked the fluids ..looks like a bit of oil in the rad .. and it seems to be reving higher than it use to..any ideas..
could have just been a frozen/stuck thermostat...I've had one or two stick before..usually squeezing the upper rad hose or tapping the housing gets them unstuck....the oily stuff in the rad could be some leftover goo in the cooling system .it's also a good bet that the goo was from the carb/choke heater becoming unclogged..it gummed up the stat for a bit, and now the truck is running better because the choke is coming off when it warms up...I'd say a rad flush would be a good idea..seems lots of these trucks have need of a good cooling system flush
well i hope your right ..i have picked up a new thermostat from napa and will order a tach also to make sure i m not over doing the engine.the spedometer says 85-90 kmh but i m running 22 3/4" tires now on 14"rims .i have had the truck up to 95kmh on the speedo but the truck felt best at 80 kmh..for now i will just make some short runs with the truck to make sure i have done no damage.
Mine always heats up over 80Kms if I'm there for too long because my thermostat doesn't open enough. What napa part # did you find for the thermostat?
the thermostat i m going to try is from a chevy sprint i think.i have not put it in the truck yet . search this site for the exact vehicle and procedure .i am taking a bit of a chance on this .i found the info on this site .on a simiar note i was on the napa site and saw that they have mini trucks listed there .punch in your truck and it finds parts.this is new so they probably don t have much listed yet but i thought this is a good start..kinda funny iwas talking with my napa dealer 2 weeks ago about how it was hard to get thru there site not being able to type in my truck type and this weekend i was able to but maby i just missed some thing before..
part of my problem is part of my truck problem is in the carb.as i said before it is idleing very high .i look at the carb today and found that the choke lever seems to have jumped as i hhave found no way to adjust it any less .i warm up the truck it won t idle down ..when i push the choke lever down (about 15 lbs presure to move it )i can get it to idle down ...any one know a way to adjust this or is this a diapham that is causeing this .i have about 500 km on this truck with no idle problems ..
this may be my problem i have been searching this forum all day finnally found something that sounds right .http://www.minitrucktalk.com/showthread.php?t=3739.......read what slimbad has written..i tried to insert his text here..couldn t figure it out.i will look into it tommorrow..
sounds like all your problems are related....carb preheater not working ,clogged thermostat...all could be related to a cooling system that needs a flush..dont force the choke against the toothed gear ...if you have a chance pull the carb off and lube everything really good...theres a lot of years of exposure to the elements on most trucks..there isn't the luxury of being up high and tight and protected like on any other vehicles,so more attention to keeping linkages lubed is in order
ok i worked on the truck today, replaced the thermostat.it worked great the only thing i had to do to it was drill a 1/16 inch hole in it and move the bolt holes in the gasket temp ended up lower than it was before.then i started looking at the carb.i pulled one of the rad hoses of the carb and i got a whole pile of black crud come out .reattached it and the idle came down a bit .so then i adjusted the choke as far as possible .the truck is now running better .i m guessing it is idleing now at 1200-1300 instead of the 3000 that it was .this is just a temperary fix till i figure out how to fix it or replace some parts .i looked at the vac lines they seem to be in good shape ,but i should start replaceing them also .the diaphams seem to be working as i saw them moving will playing with the carb .any one know what kind of vac lines to get ..can i get them at napa.thanks for the replies,i would be really lost without this site..
clip a tiny piece off a longer hose and take it to any parts store to match it up..cheaper to buy by the foot than in prepacked lengths...silicone is the best if you can find it
Suzuki Engine Problem I was driving my suzuki carry and it started to over heat, the idle was going uup abit and I was losing power. I was trying to limp it home when it quit. I tried to restart it and it would barley turn over ( If it did at alll) I am going to let it cool down before I try again Any ideas, im thinking i might have blown it up.
update stopped by napa today and picked up about 8ft of vac line .replaced the lines around the carb .then started the truck .once it got warm it idled down.who woulda thought a few dollars worth of vac line could fix so much:frustration:.the truck is sounding better than it ever did ....now to work on the rest of the lines ...thanks to all
High Idle So i pulle the thermossat and it wa stuck open. Changed it and now I still have the fast idle. Getting no heat and theres no antifreeze getting to and from the rad when i feel the hoses. I opened the bleeder screw on the thermosat but theres nothing. All the lines look good. ANy ideas . I am going to try pulling off a rad house to see if theres an air lock.
I think you need a rad flush to get the crud out ...use a chemical flush as water prob. wont cut it.....if the thermostatic choke is getting no coolant flow from a clog the choke will not operate properly..a stuck open thermostat shouldn't cause overheating, but the opposite..after flushing make sure you use the proper refill procedure...which is,fill the rad, turn the heater to full heat(make sure to have the heater on full heat when you do the flush as well),start the engine with the cap still off, once coolant starts to flow top off the rad and fill the overflow bottle , then open the bleeder screw on top of the engine till coolant comes out then close the bleeder. Are you sure you have the proper thermostat?
blown rad house. I think the thermosat stuck and blew the rad house or the rad house just blew. Where do I find a rad house?
if the hoses aren't leaking they are fine for the most part..they may be old and need replacing but shouldn't be the cause of your problem unless you have a collapsed hose,.....most cooling issues on these trucks seems to come from crud in the cooling system,..until the rad is properly flushed you won't be able to determine the overheating/no heat/idle problems, which can all be caused by blocked cooling passages....remove the thermostat and put the housing back on and do a good chemical flush with the heater on high heat
