Turns out that the cops are really cracking down on non compliance here in Winnipeg.

I can't even take out my 08 caravan and feel safe.
I have driving lights, and I know they are not DOT.

here is a link to the newspaper article
    http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/local/cruisers-curse-police-checks-99298379.html

    Nothing is safe
I know a guy who got a $200 ticket because his headlights were discolored and kinda frosty because his car was a few years old.
Cop couldn't find anything else so they picked the headlights.

So I am doing everything I can to be compliant.

I spoke to an enforcement officer for about an hour

Basically lights, are the big ones.
    Have to have all markers.
Daytime running lights ( ambers are ok )
EVERYTHING must have a DOT or SAE marking

Yea I could just bitch and complain
But its simpler to just do what I can to comply

Having an Acty, everything was pretty easy EXCEPT the headlights

    Here's my pix

I will keep that in mind
    You never know
Someone even mentioned that brake lines are being checked
I didn't even know they had DOT on them

Its really just our monopoly gov. auto insurance corporation flexing their muscles and cracking down on cruising and street racing

In order to do that, they have to pick on the Sunday cruisers

In order to "appear" as if they are not targeting certain groups, they pulling anyone and everyone from jacked 4x4's to rice bowls, to granny's wagon

EVERYBODY who has a vehicle more than a year old has a good chance of having something wrong if they want to be picky enough
    which they are

As for the trucks and other rights hand drive vehicles
They are targeting things that they know they can nail

They know darn well, that these cars are brought here without DOT and its a technicality they can exploit

Next year, they plan to totally ban right had drive vehicles here

They say they will "grandfather" the ones already here
    But not allow new ones

That means they will have to disallow it on the safety or something like that

That also means that they should ban mail trucks, garbage trucks, recycling trucks etc

Wonder how it will all play out
I want a couple more of these trucks
I hope things dont go stupider

This kind of intrusive government control is the reason I hate Liberal and NDP politics..They never leave people to make their own decisions..This type of legislation takes millions to enact and millions for ever after to enforce. Left wing governments are destroying the productivity and standard of living of North Americans..government gets bigger and takes more of your money to feed it's ever-increasing number of non producing bureaucrats..Let's hopefully learn from the dead economies of most of Europe (most of which were left leaning socialist experiments)..and stop this disease of government before it's too late.....
    rant...appologies:eek:

Finally went back to work tonight

Took the Acty with the new lights
And they are way better than expected

    Alignment is not perfect
    but very livable

I think I impressed me

I will probably eventually be retrofitting HID lights from a late model car such as a Honda S2000 or Mini Cooper in to my existing light housings. That should satisfy any lighting issue anyone might have with my truck. They are very bright but also have a good cutoff so as to not blind oncoming traffic.

running lights pass as DRLs in Ontario......you can use some cheapo fog lights from princess auto as DRLs mounted in the front bumper grilles..they have some real tiny ones that should work fine....man you guys really need a change of government in that province before they start marching you off to camps:(:p

    federal standards http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/roadsafety/safevehicles-mvstm_tsd-tsd-1080rev4_e-688.htm

you may find it in there
but it will take some searching
i will see what else i can find

    check ivoc too

    what happened ?
did you get called in for an inspection ?
or did they just pull you over?

are all your lights DOT ??

    ambers have always been accepted
just check older chevy minivans and pickups

but if that is the only issue
then you just need to macguyver the wiring

do you light have any stamping of them saying they meet japanese specs? I'm not sure if its the same for you guys but in BC theres a small line under lighting that states if the lights meet safetey requirments of the country of origin, they are acceptable. however it must be stamped on the light.

many domestics use amber DRLs. all chevy G vans for example.

I don't think pissing about with anything other than the main headlights as DRLs is a good idea.
The only safety feature in these things are the seatbelts. When you are the front bumper, you want to make sure everyone around sees you.

    Hey there,

Jsut brought in a '92 Hijet. Going in for safety today. It sounds as if your trucks passed MB Safety without the DOT stuff and then you got harrassed later? WTF??

  20. blakkmoon

    blakkmoon Member

Wish I could help but no.
    I bought it ALREADY safetied.

I did NOT get harassed by MPI.
Was just warned that it was very likely.
So I wanted to be pro active.

Right from the mouth of an MPI compliance officer.....

MPI does NOT care if you got your safety yesterday or 5 years ago.

    Safety does NOT equal compliance.

    Mine was definitely NOT compliant.
So I did as much research and work to make sure that it is.

I left a few things alone, like, seat belts.
Just to give them SOMETHING to find fault with.
Theory being that if they can't easily find something wrong, then they will just look harder.

So far |I have not been called in.

I see the guys from Alliance Tree care running around the last couple of years in a Honda like mine.
They have not done anything more than daytime running lights.
They are still on the road.

I hope your safety place KNOWS its a right hand drive truck.
Many places will REFUSE anything RHD.

Please make sure and share what happens when you go in today.

And share where you took it.

    good luck.

BTW 99% of the compliance stuff is easy DIY.

So don't stress if it does not pass today.

Hey there - took it to Accuracy on St. Annes Road just South of Fermor. They had a van there with 1-877-MINI-TRX decalled on it. Say they see a lot of them.

I need tierod ends and ball joints. Other than that it breezed through without even an advisory on anything else.

Chopping up the headlights to Frankenstein in something from a scrapyard seems like a horrible idea! (Glad it worked for you, but can you imagine the guy that didn't take as much care?) I want to see a guy snap ties a sealed beam to his hood with exposed wires and use 3/8" bolts to install salvaged seatbelts then has the cop pass it because they have DOT stamped on them. The Free Press would love that story!

Time will tell what happens. Once I get my safety, I will definately be doing some DRLs and markers. It's cheap insurance for my own safety. More of these things are coming into the province every day - they can't ignore the legitimacy of these vehicles forever. There are millions of them on the road all over the world. No "independant study" can deny that simple fact.

    Glad it all went well

but I am a little confused??
U don't have DRL's or markers and they didn't worry about it??
or you don't have them and they told you u need them to pass??

I KNOW u need them to pass

Does this shop WORK on them too??

Hijet looks like it takes standard bulbs anyway.

Glad there is someone to safety these things cause I want another one.

Curious where did you get it??

  23. starpuss

    starpuss Member

    yup they take standard bulbs.

also! DO your marker lights and other stuff asap! i got a $220.00 ticket for NOT having running lights. and non dot seatbelts!!(this was 3 months ago)

Truck needs balljoints and tierod ends for safety. No mention of the DRLs. I did order all the parts I need (and want :D) from West Shore in Victoria. Expect them today.

I will definately be doing the running lights. Seat belts maybe - can we get them from Softy's or what is the "solution" for that nonsense? Sewing on the patch from another set seems like the safest idea honestly. Why mess with bolts and anchors that are already specifically designed for that purpose?

Hijet takes regular 2D1 (or whatever) bulbs up front, so that was a sigh of relief when I started reading these threads. It never even occurred to me to check that kind of stuff before I bought it.

I bought mine privately in Calgary and drove it here last week. 19 hours on that damned seat was a special kind of torture. But 90km/hr in 5th gear all the way and it ran like a clock.

Accuracy says they work on them also. They kept throwing a name at me of some guy who is bringing in containers of them, but I've never heard of him.

    /K

Wow, regulations there are way more strict than here. When we register a vehicle or trailer here, the sheriff comes out, looks it over, verifies VIN, makes sure that lights, brakes, horn and everything work, but they don't look real close. We used to have to get a safety inspection every year, but the state thought it was a waste of time so did away with it. No need for daytime running lights, although I usually leave my Jeep on automatic. Safety equipment is a fairly loose concept here. My neighbor's pickup has a rear bumper made from a single 2x6 board that is so old and gray that it looks like driftwood.

If the local govt decided to enact Winnipeg standards overnight, I would put serious thought about kicking them in the nuts.

Hey copeina where did you get your safety. I just bought a mini truck fresh off the boat and I have taken it to a couple places just to get told they can't seem to figure it out. I have changed all my lights to DOT and Seat belt and got my day time running light, but no one seems to be able to figure it out.

    Lighting whoas

Going through as many treads as possible to bring myself up to speed here. So my headlights have a DOT stamp on the back side nothing showing on the front, so to pass the OOP inspection, does the mechanic or do I have to disassemble the lamp to prove it is DOT? I have a hijet deck van which has no front or rear steel bumper for easily installing additional DOT lights. WIll i have to replace and modify existing mounting points to put in new lamps?
How do I modify the taillights? Can I purchase the same shape and style with DOT markings?
