is a 3''lift a real 3'' in rear

    distance from bolt to bolt [ center] on a 3 '' lift........looks more like 6'' with measure tape........?.......thanks

    The shackle needs to be lengthend 6" to obtain 3" of lift. Approximately.

    Well, the original shackle has a set distance between the bolt holes, so subtract that. Then ther is the consideration that you are only moving one end of the spring for the lift, the front point stays the same, and the axle is about midway on the spring, so you are relay only moving the axledown (or body up) about 1/2 of the difference between the original shackle length and the 'lifted' shackle length.

    Speedy has given a very good explanation. Most of the shackles that I have seen increase the distance between the spring eye and the frame mounting eye by 3". Because this only lowers one end of the spring (or raises the truck) the axle only moves about 1 1/2". This is the reason that trucks with a 3" lift kit installed look more level than the stock ride height which is slightly nosed down.

    To carry loads, you need more lift in the back. But to clear tires while turning, you need more lift in the front. Is a puzzlement.
