In the US, what insurance companies are owners using? Are you insured for liability only or collision as well?

I just struck out with Hagerty, their underwriters declined me for rust and for getting a good deal ( $1,600 )on the purchase price. I was told they don't cover vehicles with a low initial value. My '98 Sambar truck is far from being a banged up rust bucket. State Farm wanted over $500 for a 5-month policy, liability only.

First off, you are in NJ, so high insurance rates no matter what probably. If you are under 30 years old that could be an issue as well.

Hagerty is for collector cars which these are not really, I'm not surprised they wouldn't cover it.

I have the legal minimums for NC and liability with Erie and it runs me a couple hundred per year if I remember right. Of course I have 2 other cars with them and my house as well. So savings.

I have a collector car, 80 RX-7, with Grundy which runs me a couple of hundred which an agreed on price.

Had a hard time online since sambar doesn’t show in the drop downs. Had to talk with them and ended up adding to our existing insurer for a couple hundred a year.

I have full coverage insurance through Hagerty. It only added slightly over $100.00 a year to my existing policy. It greatly helped that I'm a long time customer and have many other antique vehicles insured with them. When I added my kei truck, the agent told me they often won't cover them and he had to get it signed off by his supervisor.

Another Hagerty customer. No issue whatsoever getting them to insure. FWIW, I also moved three other "collector cars" with them, so I'm unclear if this may have been part of their underwriting decision.

I had a local company for about 1 year, then they asked me to verify my VIN. Then came the we're sorry your policy won't be renewed. I also have 2 other cars and house with them ( will be switching soon ). I contacted Am Fam, who I had in another state and now they are in WA. They wouldn't do it but went through Hagerty. They wanted to know purchase price and send pictures of all sides, engine and interior. It took 2 days and I was insured. I also like the Hagerty mag and the Saturday emails with car articles. My premium is almost half I was paying before.

I had a hard time finding insurance, tried Allstate, Hagerty, Geico, Progressive and finally State Farm. I have a perfect driving record, it was just the vehicle and vin that was the issue. With State Farm I have limits that meet the minimum for my umbrella policy, which I believe is $250K, and it cost me a little less than $400/year.

Just covered at State Farm 100/300/100 liability, uninsured motorist, 250 ded Comprehensive, and no collision. $127 per half yr. Years ago, I had a Suzuki Carry, had no trouble getting Ins, but couldn't plate it in Ohio. Weird.....

Interesting, Haggerty told me: they normally don't insure vehicles worth less then $10,000 and in general tehy have an issue with pickups unless pristine condition.

I just renewed it for a second year through Hagerty in January, but the insurance card says Essentia Insurance Co. - NIAC no. 37915. It records the make as Subaru and the model as Sambar KS4. Then my vin is correctly listed.

    Hi, My first post!! :)

I just got my '95 Subaru Sambar truck and I had some difficulty finding insurance in Massachusetts. I was able to get a policy through Geico, but decided to pass on it because it was only for liability and offered no protection for my vehicle. They wanted $874 for 6-months.

I contacted Hagerty and they quoted me a yearly policy for $374, but were unable to provide it because I don't have a separate daily-driver vehicle.

I ended up with USAA and now I have a regular daily-driver policy $968 which includes comprehensive and collision as well as all of the state mandatory liability coverage. I should also add that they have properly identified my vehicle on the policy... Subaru Sambar model: KS4.

I hope someone finds this useful :)

I don't see a reason to pay for comp/collision, the first accident they will total it and give almost nothing for it. Its such an old and odd vehicle theres very little to guide them on costs or repair cost. Thats just my opinion.

Thank you, that does make sense! Right now my little Sambar is my precious baby, so I need a little time for normality to return before I consider adjusting the coverage. :)
