Well this must be what happens when people hear you’re working on a mini truck. Folks are calling me wanting to sell theirs. 3 is my limit. Have no idea what year it is but I think the Vin is Jda000S8000305919 It’s a Daihatsu S80. That will be a project in itself on another thread site on the forum in another year. I think I’m OCD.
So you Picked up a LHD US Off-road unit now you’ll just need to remove the speed limiter and theC clip in the transfer case so it will Go into high gear and go faster then 25 mph
The limiter is a box under dash and uses if I remember correctly (Been about 10 + years since I did it ) a signal from the speedo and it cuts the fuel to the main jet ( has an extra solenoid switch that cuts off the main jet ) and I believe the spark too The C clip in the transfer case keeps the high/ low shift leaver to go into only the low and neutral. It’s on the shaft the shift fork sides on . If you take off the PTO cover and use a mirror you’ll see it when someone moves the lever from low to neutral, and then try to move it to high you’ll see it keeping it from sliding farther . You use a pick to pull it off and ( just don’t drop it into the case) you now have high. This works for both the 4wd and 2wd trucks as the 2wd trucks got a transfer case but no front output shaft
Any chance you have a service manual on a PDF you would share? PTO as in power take off, like a tractor? Just trying to make sure I’m thinking correctly. We took the bed off or what’s left of the bed an everything looked easier compared to the Sambar & Suzuki/ Mazda. Tried to see if it would fire up. Disconnected the fuel line, by the way did you change to an electric pump? Recommendations?, sprayed some starter fluid into the carb after freeing the choke which was stuck but no luck. I surprised it didn’t hit. Tried several more times, nothing. We opened the distributor and looked at the points and rotator, filed the points checked for spark good to go there but still no luck. It was dark by then so we didn’t check the plugs but we will. Any suggestions? Also is there a pump inside the fuel tank or is it just a manual only? Sorry for so many request and questions. I didn’t have any Hijets with the PTO covers here , but here’s where it at on the transfer case , with the bed off you should see it with no problems as it sits right on top
Thanks Koffer. That helped me identify the plate. Koffer can you tell me what year Daihatsu S80 I have from the serial number? Will S80 parts fit The S80LP Type number on the plate?
There is one of the Japanese parts sites which has a lookup, for the parts which will tell you the year and month of manufacture from the serial number. Sorry, I can’t remember the site, but hopefully someone else who does will chime in with the url. I think the leaders in front of the S80, which were added to get the vin long enough for the US system, would throw it off, so just start entering from the S. Generally anything which isn’t lhd specific will fit. Engine, Trans, Etc, are the same as they were in Japan. There are a couple of things like the speed limiter box, and the pulse solenoid on the carb, that are different.
The J stands for country of origin ( Japan) the D stands for Daihatsu the A stands for what daihatsu called the body style for NA . This was to make a 17 digit VIN code for the NA market , the 10th digit is the year code but since it’s a Number zero “0“ it means nothing as the number 0 wasn’t not used along with Letter O I think I have a English parts manual for these units floating around ( might even have a service manual too ) got to look as my 1st Daihatsu was a 2wd LHD jumbo cab about 10+ years ago
Looked at both seat belts and the white label on both were torn off. I guess they didn’t read the “removal of this tag is against the law” oh wait that’s on pillows ha.
The S80 series started production in Japan in May of 1986, with the 550-cc EB engine. They started installing the 660-cc EF engine in March of 1990, for the JDM versions, and they became the S82(2wd), and and S83(4wd). The S80LP, means it is a left hand drive S80P, 2-wd pickup. The 80 designation means it was probably produced before the change of the larger engine. But since it was being built for export to the US, they may have continued with the smaller engine, and S80 designation for longer just to avoid having to recertify the units with the larger engine. Has anyone seen an S82, S83, or S100 series LHD factory truck With an American VIN number? Anyone know when Daihatsu, quit importing them?
