    Howdy all,

Been a lurker for a while, found a lot of good information when I had a Mitsubishi minicab and still gathering information on my most recent purchases (in my signature).

Received Washington titles earlier this week as they were purchased in July 2024 in Vancouver, WA with an understanding that I wouldn't have an issue getting them registered in AK after getting WA titles. So, I went to the Palmer, AK DMV office for title & registration this morning. I was informed that vehicles newer than 1982 with VIN's under 17 digits have to have a physical VIN verification / inspection, so I made a trip home to get the '96 Carry trailered over to their office. Ended up getting denied under Section 28.10.041 (a) (4); which states the vehicle is determined to be mechanically unsafe to be driven or moved on a highway, vehicular way or area, or other public property in the state. However, they would register it if I got a letter from the manufacturer stating that the vehicle met US Safety standards at the time of construction (which isn't going to happen as there is a Federal DOT Exemption permitting their importation).

The representative at the DMV also stated that everyone in Alaska with a registered / titled on road vehicle with a vin number under 17 digits and newer than 1982 is being audited. Those not meeting the mechanical safety standards of Alaska will have their registrations cancelled before the end of the year. This is a large blow for the several kei trucks that I've seen running around on the road system with regular license plates. Some of which were brought to AK within this past year.

While I had purchased one rig to use as a grocery chaser (rather than my 1 ton diesel) while in town, looks like I'll be stuck using it off road only and those folks with new side by sides can get their on-road license plates and cruise around town. I'd still use it to go grab groceries in my community if they hadn't banned off road vehicles within city limits (those licensed on-road are permitted, go figure).

Now off to search the forums more and see if I can find additional information on mounting up a set of tracks for winter use.
