It sounds like a front wheel bearing? Or maybe a front CV shaft? It used to only happen ever once in a while and go away? But it has been happening more and more! Some times if I cut the wheel to the left just a little it will go away? Does anyone have any Ideas on where to start? I have not found anything hot or loose?
CV shafts won't usually howl, failure mode generally indicated by rattles and clunks. Jack the front end up and start poking around ftw.
I did and found nothing? How does the front axel nut come off? How do I remove the front half shafts? And can I drive it a little without the half shafts installed?
Could it be coming from my front diff? Not it is doing it more and more! How am I going to figure this out? Help!
Could it be like the front dif pitman bearing? Does the front drive shaft come unbolted, from the transfer case?
Well I made a 200 mile run Friday! It started off making the noise every once in awhile till I got it up to speed! Drove non stop 90miles then got out and nothing was hot, anywhere, except the exh side rear end and the trans itself! I need a muffler and tail pipe and I think that will then be ok? I ran it hard on the way home, into a 15-20 mile hr head wind! Parked got out and re checked, NOTHING! And on the way home no noise! Now the only thing I have even seen is that the splines in the front hub have slop or play in them?
Get it on a hoist with all 4 wheels off the ground in 4wd and have someone get it to 60kmh while you listen with a mechanics stethoscope, easiest way to tell if it's a wheel bearing. Cv axle noise is usually a clunk on turns, wheel bearings get louder with speed. Could be front differential noise too, stethoscope is the easiest way
Well its the end of April and I have put another full tank plus of fuel through the truck on road, and no more howl! What could it have been?
I would double check the fluid levels in the trans, transfer case, and diffs just to be safe. If you haven't already changed them I would be willing to bet its the same fluid it came from japan with.
