Fuel Leak on Left Turns

    Hi everyone,

I’ve had my 1996 Mitsubishi Minicab U42T for a little while now and I’ve mostly everything working as I want. However, I can’t seem to figure out this fuel leak issue I’ve had. I bought a new rubber seal and inserted some round metal rings to tightly seal the cap to the neck, but it still leaks on left turns, even when it’s mostly empty!

I was wondering if anyone could help me out? If this can’t be sorted with the original cap, I’ve been looking at getting an aftermarket one but I’m unsure whether the cap is vented or not, so help on this would be greatly appreciated also.

    Thanks!

So you're saying the fuel is leaking back out of the filler / gas cap area?

These metal rings and seals you speak of, may not be helping at all. You need a proper fitting cap and seal, no additional parts needed.

I'd say if fuel is clearly leaking from the cap ( IE: you're sure it's not the filler neck cracked or something else ) then the solution is simple, get a new cap and seal and ditch the aftermarket / additional seal solution.

As for the cap being vented, I think if it clicks in place like modern tanks then it is vented. If it just seals shut to a firm close, then it's not.

You may have a hard time finding a aftermarket replacement but who knows anythng is possible...Are you familiar with your options for OEM parts orders? This is for my vehicle (U44V w/ 4A30 motor ) so yours will most likely vary but I also show a gasket there

$31 from the land of the rising sun, again make sure you check your VIN

After picking up my U42T from the port and filling the gas tank, my friends who were driving in a separate car behind me said that when I pulled out of the gas station and stopped at a red light, an inordinate amount of gasoline sloshed out of the gas filler cap and onto the ground. Maybe it's functioning as designed.

Double check to make sure you have the gas cap all the way on. I was also having leak issues, but it turned out I only had the cap half way on , and so the rubber gasket was never touching the filler lip. There is a kind of 2-step on this gas cap that I wasn't familiar with, but now that I know about it I haven't had any leaking since.
