I'm in the process of replacing the Japanese head unit and the front dash speakers (Sanyo 4") Are there supposed to be rear speakers? I couldn't find any -- and the wiring diagram doesn't show any. I might add some to the back area since there seems to be space between the outside sheet metal and the inside upholstery.
Rear speakers were optional for Joypop in the gen 9 vans (90-98) but they were kind of a joke. I once saw a pic of them and they were small dual speakers that mounted up in the rear roof area behind the high brake light. Other mention some 4 inch speakers in the rear panels but I don't see any markings for cutouts back there. The 1999 is completely different, my front speakers are in the door.
Ok thanks! I just got the elec service manual from Yokohama and there's no rear speaker wires listed anywhere The system is plenty loud with just the fronts .... as long as it's not running.
Yeah, I updated my radio and speakers but I never listen when driving, the engine noise drowns it out HA HA.
I was poking around BAT ... and it looks like the higher-level Joypop had rear speakers and fancy map pockets
The plot thickens Turns out the sheetmetal behind the trim panel already has bracing for 4" rear speakers. And they even pre-cut the board for the speakers and the screws. How cool is that?
Thanks for raining on my parade The speakers ain't cool but the fact that they drilled out the panels is I got a hold of the factory diagrams and it shows a harness for the rear speakers ...... but I couldn't find it in the roof behind the headliner. This van came with an aftermarket Pioneer head unit but the original connector is long gone. The rear speaker wires are present at the head unit but they are cut -- and I can't find the other ends -- so I will run new wires to back. I also ran new/modern wire to the front dash speakers. My new head unit w/ 10" screen is in. Now I can finally get radio stations plus Android auto.
Ignore the negative noise. Wow. The new van generation is harder to run the wires. My gen is easy, just drop them in the gutter that runs the length of the headliner.
Thanks @t_g_farrell do you happen to have any pics of how that looks? As far as I can tell on the 99+ ... there's a hole in the a-pillar about where your knee is, and then the whole bundle runs up between the panels and along the roof line. I thought about trying to run a snake but not sure if I'd have any luck with it. I figure it might be easier to run speaker wire along the edge of the floor underneath the trim since that is easy to get to:
Your head liner appears to cover the gutters I think. Heres what my headliner looks like. That bungee cord is hooked over the edge of the gutter. Its open the length of the van and has the wire loom for the lights and rear fixtures in it. :
Gotcha -- thanks! I'll see if maybe there's a gutter that I couldn't see before (under the headliner).
It looks like the headliner is removable. Mine is just fabric glued to the top sheet metal from what I can tell. I bet they didn't change the way its constructed much but added a nicer looking headliner to cover things up.
I checked and the headliner on these is formed. I'm not sure if that's the right term. In other words ...... if you took out the entire headliner and put it in your driveway it would still be the same shape I started to pull it back but I didn't trust it. There's some wiring in there but I'll try the floor first and see how that goes. Rear speakers just arrived from Crutchfield.
Nothing glamorous but they're in. Kickers to match the front. Turns out there's holes under the dash, so I had to snake up the A-pillar, the run along the top gutter ( thanks @t_g_farrell ), then into a hole in the C-pillar, then snaked down into the void behind the panel.
