Longtime follower first time posting hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I picked up my carry really cheap years ago with 3” lift and 26” tires and love the truck. It had a blown head gasket so I replaced gasket and cleaned carb and truck ran great but could never wrap out 4th gear I’m sure due to oversized tires throwing off gear ratio. I was lucky to get rpm to 2800 which truck would maybe do 40 mph but that was plenty for me. So after my 3rd time of blowing a head gasket span of several years I have now decided to try a kubota d1105. My question is with the flywheel I had machine shop machine f6a flywheel to fit kubota and am using same clutch and drive train that came with the truck. I have it bolted up, drive shafts cut to fit and in, and am working on motor mounts and radiator relocates now. But I am using f6a starter and doesn’t have quite enough power to spin diesel over fast enough and I’m concerned about flywheel being too light for a diesel and having excessive vibration. Has anyone tried what I’m doing? I’ve searched all the forums and found nothing I’m really close to having this done other than the starter being my main issue. I know it’s a 0.8kw counterclockwise 8 tooth and I ordered a 1.6kw counter clockwise 8 tooth that bolt pattern isn’t quite the same but the machine shop that’s been helping me along said they can fab it to fit. I know my diesel only revs to 3k rpm less than half what f6a does but top end speed is not a concern for me. I use this in the mud and on trails so I like the 26” tires and I think I will still get my 40 mph with this engine which is plenty. Sorry for long response just seeing if anyone has successfully done this swap before
Most of my experience has been with much larger gas & diesel engines. If I was to try what you are trying to accomplish, I firmly believe I would have went with the starter & flywheel/clutch assy which the Kubota came with. It seems to me that with these little 2, 3, & 4 cyl engines, the mass of the flywheel would be most critical to the smooth operation(smoothing out the power pulses). Torque is quite different too. A 350 HP chevy or ford can get by with a 10, 11, or 12 in. single disc clutch whereas a 350 HP Cummins or Mack requires a 16 in. double disc clutch to transmit the torque produced. Not to rain on your parade, just to try to ensure that you have given full consideration to the forces involved. Fred
The reason I picked this engine is the f6a is almost 40hp and almost 40 ft lbs of torque. The d1105 is 25hp and 51 ft lbs of torque just making the power at a lot less rpm, I would assume only adding 11 ft lbs of torque wouldn’t be too significant to tear up any of the drive train components. My main question was if anyone has done the same or close to the same swap and to get any input on the same subject. I have done 12 valve swaps on obs fords and wouldn’t even compare the two. But thanks for not raining on my parade.
Also f6a had a 9” flywheel the d1105 has a 10” flywheel so trying to fit a 10” flywheel in a 9” bell housing isn’t happening
Whether lightening the fly will matter a lot probably depends on whether the new engine is internally or externally balanced. But, since you cut down the face of the existing flywheel the balance should be effected. Flywheel mass can dampen some pulsation. Is there a front pulley/dampener you could put on the front. Back when i was playing with hi-po engines there were a couple of companies which were making a dampener for various engine which had metal beads in a silicone oil, which would dampen the vibration at low rpm, where the engine was running lumpity-lump.
Yes d1105 is internally balanced from what I found most diesels are and flywheels are separately balanced so you can interchange flywheels, I couldn’t find out if the f6a is separately balanced or if flywheel is balanced to the engine but I had machine shop balance flywheel after they machined it to fit. The d1105 does have a small harmonic balancer on the front too so like my machinist said try it and he can add weight to the flywheel if needed. Thanks for the comments every bit helps definitely a lot to consider doing this but if it works out it will be the exact machine I want. I have had nothing but trouble with the f6a engine but I love everything else about the truck how the drive train is more like a common truck setup. I hate all these belt driven side by sides
You really need the Kabota flywheel and make an adapter housing. The next thing you will find is that trans has the complete wrong gearing! You took out an engine that Can turn 10,000 RPM with one that only turns 3,000 I am making 75 hp or so from my Stock F6A and adding a carb and exhaust! I even have thoughts of a triple carb set up!
