Hello hivemind I have a 94 Carry that I use a farm vehicle. Starts right up easily and idles for maybe 10-15 seconds and seems to get choked out of fuel. Just dies. Also will tach right up if I step a little at a time, like pumping the throttle, but will die if I just step on it. Spark Plugs changed recently, fresh fuel, and new fuel filter. Fuel pump has a sort of rhythmic clicking sound (like 1 per second) that actually started last year. I never heard it before that but I've used it for 50 hours at least like that and doesn't seem to be an issue. Wondering what the next step to take is. Thanks!
You need to verify that the fuel pressure and flow are in spec. Could be as easy as bad connection on the pump or some other small nit. If that pans out ok, then move on to make sure the timing is good and the wires and dizzy cap/rotor are good. Now you are down to air which is when the carb comes into play. It could be a dirty carb or something like a vacuum leak thats popped up to cause you havoc. Another issue is the valve adjustments. They need to be adjusted every 20km or so.
^^^ All good points. I don't have a ton to add since mine is EFI which has its own set of problems. I just got a smoker which is great for tracking down vacuum leaks and they are cheap. Plus who doesn't want to buy more tools? With the fuel .... is your filter in the tank or external? Even though you have new gas, there might be some sediment in the tank that is getting sucked up by the fuel pump and blocking flow. Also with regard to the carb -- if it's been a while, you might want to take it out and clean all the passages with carb brushes. I just had a similar problem as yours on one of my boat outboards and it had a tiny fuel passage that was clogged. So it would run for a little bit on whatever gas was left in the lines, but the fuel pump was blocked from sending more. Also a long shot but since you're using it on a farm ..... is the air filter clogged?
