Bad noise, lost power...not good

The mechanic opened it up and checked the bearings. A rod bearing was so completely destroyed it has probably taken out the rest of the bottom end. No used engines have surfaced so I'll probably pick up another Sambar. This one is a '94 and has 53,000km.

Am I an idiot for considering another Sambar?

The sambar is great, as you know. If you're considering getting one with 53,000 on it I'd also consider getting a set of new con rod bearings from Minibrutes. It's recommended that the bearings be changed every 60,000km. Depending on how well the engine was cared for you can drive a long while without changing them, but you're taking a chance. The other option is going with another model. The 3cyl engines don't seem prone to this type of failure, probably because they're slightly larger.

If I was to buy another sambar, I'd commit myself to inspecting and possibly rebuilding the bottom end before doing anything else.
