Bad news for Georgia mini truck owners

I got a letter from the tag office today stating that my registration was erroneously sent to me and that it would be revoked as Kei trucks do not meet safety standards. They request that I remove the tag. they failed to mention how to go about getting a refund for the 11 months that I paid for and didn't get.

I hate it for you. Does Georgia allow golf carts, mopeds, those stupid E-bikes and those really stupid one wheel things on the road? Those things are far more dangerous than a mini truck and they seem to be everywhere in this part of NC. Fortunately minitrucks are legal here, though I use mine offroad.

Sorry to hear it - it's always at the back of my mind that the party could be over any time due to new regulation. I'm surprised that WA is so blasé about vehicles in general given we are usually pretty highly regulated in other areas. There aren't even any state safety inspections.

Yeah, I was planning on dropping the insurance and turning in the tag anyway since I use it mainly off road, but revoking the title is what has me chapped. I don't think it's legal to do it the way they are. I'll get a letter out to my state reps and governor and see if it does any good. I'll keep everyone posted if I hear anything.

Yes, I was bummed when I recently saw that in the news. I have been saving to buy one in NC with a title so I could transfer it to Georgia. I wanted to make off road mini-campers and have already bought the steel. I guess the only way around it is to maybe register it under a corporation in Montana or something, if that is not a scam itself. I have a full sized AT truck and a Ford Bronco II MT-5 that gets a good solid 13-15 MPG towing a trailer :-D so I was looking forward to a KEI truck.

I will still buy a KEI if only to use on my very small property for now, though I will probably end up going newer and automatic since my wife can't drive a manual transmission due to knee issues.

Montana LLC is legit, however it's not going to stop a cop from pulling you over and possibly impounding your truck if they decide to.

Thank you for the reply and information. I have decided I am going to register and run a legitimate business out of state, either NC or TN, and register the mini truck to the business. Probably NC because they are legit there now.

North Carolina has high-way use tax (sales tax) on the purchase of vehicles, then also yearly property taxes.
Tennessee has sales tax, but not property taxes.
No permanent registration for either from what I can tell.

Montana has no sales tax, no yearly property tax, and permanent registration for vehicles older than 15 years old. This is the primary reason people use Montana. You're going to go through equal amount of work doing this in other states, but likely less benefit.

Edit: Also, a Montana LLC is a legitimate business. It is classified as an "asset holding business" and is entirely legit. There's nothing shady about it aside from the "moral gray" area of dodging your states taxes.

God bless Montana, I do believe the sky is actually bigger there :)
