After a year of trouble free driving I'm finally paying the price for not replacing the original (and very dead) Japanese battery that came with my truck. My alternator seems dead and I need to pull it out to repair it. Problem is, I can't get the damn thing out. I got it loose but there just doesn't seem to be enough clearance to get it out because the pulley can't clear the plastic shroud. Is there something else that needs to come off to slip it out?
I got it out through the top, but that does not seem to be the correct way. I did some searching and if you take the crank pulley/fan off you can get to some bolts and then that entire plastic cover comes off giving you room to bring the alternator out from the bottom. It's the same procedure for getting to the timing belt. I was going to have the alternator rebuilt but I ran into a list of possible compatible part numbers and many of them look promising. Decided to give this one a try for $50. It sure looks similar, except the pulley. Any advice if I should try and swap the pulley or use as is?
if you use the old pulley on the new alternator, the old belt size will fit and the alternator has the same speed. And here you can calculate the difference in speed with old/new pulley: Pulley Calculator - Centers - RPM - Belt Length and Speed https://www.blocklayer.com/pulley-belteng.aspx
