Alternator Only Working When Warm

Now that the truly cold weather is here, (sub zeros), my alternator is only charging once the motor warms up to the point that the temperature gauge lifts off the pin. Soon as it warms up, everything is good, and it goes back up to 14 to 14.4 volts, (depends on how far the voltage dropped before it starts to work), and everything is fine.

Short of adding a heater to the lower hose, does anyone have anything that can get it working when it is cold?

Sounds like voltage regulator is going out.

Could be. I might order a kit, just to have on hand.

Are the voltage regulators internal or external?

It is internal. I’ll order a new one and keep it in stock.
