50mph vibration, revisited

As most are aware, the Acty is highly susceptible to the “death wobble” as some refer to it. In which wheel balance I feel is 100% the issue, and then exacerbated by worn components that allow said imbalance to resonate and get worse.

Well after replacing the front bushings and the majority of my vibration eliminated, I turned focus back to the wheels. I’m on aftermarket 14x5’s with Vredestein snow tires. Balanced on a road force machine.

So decided to check runout on the wheels themselves. Of which I found due to the lack of hub centering that the wheel studs allowed upwards of .015-.020” of runout. Hub assembly and rotor sub .005” in some cases a couple tops.

Leads me to believe that a vast majority of us are dealing with running wheels balanced to the center of the wheel but not mounted center to the hubs.

I don’t know what the fix is quite yet, but am curious about possible wobble bolts or the like that would allow me to torque centered up rather than where the stud pulls it.

You can get wheel centering rings to locate the wheel to the hub better but your hub needs to have a lip do make that happen. I had to do this on some aftermarket wheels from Konig for my RX-7. Also make sure you are using the right kind of lug nuts for the given wheel. Some wheels require a certain shape to the bottom of the nut that will force the wheel into the right position. Sometimes its tapered and sometimes is a rounded taper.

Yeah, that's the problem is these trucks don't come factory with hub's that center the wheels. Kind of an issue when smaller wheels are much more sensitive to imbalance.

Almost all aftermarket wheels are going to use tapered lugs. Ball seat is pretty standard for an OEM, especially in the euro market, but pretty rarely used in the aftermarket.

I am wondering if a tapered wobble nut could be used to center the wheel and then torqued in place.
