Hey everyone. I am hoping to start pulling the engine apart after blowing it up last month. I had received some great help from Andrew at JDM Imports in the US and was likely going to get parts from him and begin the repair process. However due to time constraints I am wondering anyone knows of an engine rebuild shop in Canada who can fix this engine OR sell me a rebuilt short block core? Let me know. Thanks.
No help here but I am curious how you killed the motor. Did she overheat and just shit out or what? Id like to know how much abuse these bad boys can take .
Well, I am planning to finally drop the pan this weekend to have a look at things. It was the first time it took the vehicle out so I am not familiar with it yet. I would like to believe I was not killing the engine with RPM and load but it is becoming evident that I possibly did. Again, investigation finally begins this weekend. So if you base this evaluation of "how much abuse can it handle" off solely on this one and only drive I have taken, I am going to say "it can't handle any abuse!". So as mentioned, I will make a call this weekend if I rebuild at home or buy a prebuilt short block or have someone else do the work. I am just looking for a reputable source in Canada to speak with.
Good info, thanks for sharing. Curious to hear what you find. I'm not convinced a run at high rpms was the culprit, rather something else was worn / ready to give out, especially if you didn't overheat. I've pushed my 4A30 pretty hard with some semi-torture testing. Running at like 7k rpms for 10+ minutes with the pedal to the floor and it's amazing how it didn't miss a beat. Good luck, hopefully you can find some options for a motor swap. There is also a company called GR imports in the USA, I've got no experience with them but perhaps they could find a motor.
Previous owner said he replaced the timing belt. I am wondering if it was done correctly or if it was off on timing. I was around 6-7k rpm as thats were it seems to not be bogging with load. My mind was telling me that for the application 3-4k was to low. To be honest if the oil pump let go, I am not sure how, that would torch the bearings quick at the RPM I was running. Its makes all the bad noises. Once it let go I probably didn't do it any favors as I was in the bush and the recovery was a pain in the ass. I dont have an issue dealing with great companies in the US. However I need to factory in freight costs and exchange. The dollar sucks right now.
So began the process of engine removal today. As you can see by the pics my suspicions of a rod bearing failure was true. looks like my rod journal on the crank was damaged as well. So I guess I am rebuilding.
So upon engine tear down, I noticed the oil pump was not correct to the marks on the block. the previous owner did change the timing belt and the cam and crank timing are good, but not the oil pump according to the manual. if the pump was 90-100 degrees out of proper timing, would that starve the bearings? I would assume so.
So did some additional reading about the oil pump and counter balance shaft. I am still a bit confused and cannot find clarification on the proper installation on a 5 valve DOHC motor.
