Changed out the front and rear differential gear oil, no problems, just tight under there. Drained the transfer case and went to look for a drain for the transmission. Couldn't find the drain for the transmission. Checked the capacities from the Danco book and they list the V5M1 transmission holding 1.7 L. Book also show separate plugs for the transfer case and transmission. I put just under 2L in to get it back up to the filler plug. My question is, which plug should I be using to check the level in the transfer case and transmission? The one that says "OIL FILLER" on the transfer case? Or, the one that's on the transmission? I'm at the same place with a 2000 Minicab and have been unable to find out what fluids go in the front differential, transmission, transfer case and rear differential with the search function. Do they all get gear oil?
Cant find the specs on any(english) oil finder site, considering ordering a workshop service manual for it to find out. Edit - spoke too soon, motul japan list 75w85 gl4 for trans, no mention of diff though http://oil-select.motul.co.jp/searches/view/18646
James Dinko transfer case manual by Jason Thorell posted Apr 8, 2020 at 2:35 PM so in the James Dinko manual it shows a separate fill / check plug on the side of the transfer housing. Have not checked mine to see if it's there.
well the Danko book reads for rear diff; diff. normal type GL5 gear oil, above 10 degree celcius SAE90W, below 10 degree celcius SAE80W LSD type mitsubishi LSD differential oil and in the transmission section, it reads "multi-gear oil 75w/85w So perhaps different oils in diffs vs trans then? help?
Very common to have different oils in trans and diff, trans oil tends to be GL4 rated which is designed for brass synchros. That multigear is a GL4 rated oil.
Some GL5 is rated as safe for yellow metal. It will say so on the bottle, and they tend to be prouder of it.
Anyone ever figured out where to drain trans fluid? just bought a 2002 minicab. Need some help also, maybe the transfer case drain plug is where the transmission fluid drains as well? help
Was anyone able to answer mdjackson's original question? " My question is, which plug should I be using to check the level in the transfer case and transmission? The one that says "OIL FILLER" on the transfer case? Or, the one that's on the transmission?" Does the transfer case and transmission fill from the same plug? Cheers Howard
The OIL FILLER plug on the transmission case should be used to check and fill to the max level... simply fill until you reach to the point the oil is dripping, let it drip if you filled too much, then put the bold and be done with it.
