Hi All - My 97 Acty truck won't start. Gas is getting to the carb. If the truck has been sitting for a while, it will turnover and run for a few minutes before dying. https://youtube.com/shorts/fXooHLl-MXo?feature=shared Advice welcome!
your video is only showing you cranking. . . not starting. Now long does it run? 5 min 10 mins? Are you driving it or just sitting there idling?
That is correct. This is what it does most of the time. Cranks but won't start. When it does start, it'll run for a minute or two before sputtering out.
check for spark. Pull a plug and see if it is wet after trying to start it. How do you know there is gas in carb? Have you tried spraying fuel in the carburetor throat while cranking? when it does start, can you Rev it up?
I agree see if a bit of fuel down the carburetor will get it started if so you have a fuel issue, if not check spark.
Replaced spark plugs. Didn't do anything. Need to check for spark, but it's probably back to the carburetor for gremlin-hunting.
while you have the plugs out (all 3), lay them ontop valve cover and crank, see what color and sound you get while cranking. Looking for good blue snap! if yellow (or not there at all) then we'll have look at ignition possibilities. You need to rule out if their part of the problem, before moving on to fuel.
& thank you for that suggestion! No spark on any of the 3 plugs. So I'm staying out of the carburetor for now and going into the ignition system. All suggestions on how to tackle this are welcome.
When I first got my truck the contacts inside the distributor cap and the contact on the rotor were very corroded, something to check as part of the process for sure.
Thanks!!! I don't know this comment didn't come through in my digest - I've replaced the ignition coil with no luck (that was a pain in the butt project). Distributor cap and rotor contact are my next stop. Thanks. Will report back.
Ok, y'all - Follow-up! Gas is getting to the carb (as evidenced by detaching the gas hose leading into the carb and fresh gas coming out [as well as the pump spurting gas through that hose]). Replaced the distributor cap. Spark is getting to all 3 spark plugs. The engine will start if I spray carb cleaner into the air intake. So - I am afraid that I must go into the carb of the Acty. If anyone has suggestions, I am happy to hear them, but at this point the issue has been isolated to the carburetor. I've no option but to explore this avenue further.
there are two solenoid on the side of the carb. one is a fuel cut, should be clicking, turning on, with the key turning on. Keeps fuel from the idle jets when it is off, key off. your is not getting power, or is stuck, or is bad. you should pull it and test it. and you can cover the hole while it is out and fuel will get to the jets, and down the side of the carb if your not careful, but you "can" start the motor with it out, hole plugged. You didn't learn that from me, be careful.
Looking over how complicated this job is based on this video, would I just be better off replacing the whole carburetor? The fuel cut costs $40, and a carb costs $140, but that price difference is worth it for me not to have to pull the carb again. What's the likelihood of other carb parts breaking? She is a 97.
I replaced both solenoid valves >10 years ago and nothing else on the carb had to be replaced. https://minitrucktalk.com/threads/performance-issues-resolved.14267/#post-86474 16024-PZ3-000 solenoid for air 16031-PZ3-000 solenoid for air in the link above I described my problem. Usually these solenoid valves last for abt 100.000 km I was told here in Japan by a Kei car repair shop.
Using a battery, I tested both the air and slow cut solenoid while they were still on the carb, in the truck (in situ). Both worked fine. I've ordered a new carburetor, but before I install it (it'll arrive in May [i hope]), is there a fuse for the carb that I should test/replace? If electricity is not getting to the solenoids, then testing the solenoids themselves doesn't diagnose the cause, which leads me to my fuse query.
