My 1991 Hijet Deck Van is 4wd with hi & low. I've never owned something with hi & low 4wd. I've also never owned a Kei Truck before. When I put the 4wd shifter into the neutral position. The transmission doesn't seem to engage when i put the manual shifter into gear. There is also a button on the 4wd Hi/Low shifter. Does this do anything? How do I engage 2wd only with this configuration so i'm not traveling around in 4wd on the road? How would I know whether or not I'm driving in 2wd or 4wd just incase?

Hello! On the 1991's, you have to put the 4WD shifter (plastic one with button) in either H/L regardless to engage the transmission. To activate 4WD in H, press the 4X4 button on the shifter after shifting to H. You should see a green (it's green on my S83) light on your dash turn on. This means 4WD is activated. In L, 4X4 will automatically turn on and you should see the green light pop on when you shift into L. If you are just in H and haven't pressed the button (no green light), you are in 2WD. Good luck! I also just bought my first Kei Truck, so I'm learning through it too!
