The title is done as an ATV, so the rules apply the same, so you can drive the Minitruck on the roads. I got insurance through AmFam, but they would only do as a truck, but that gives me 0(zero) deductible on glass, and all the other fun stuff like Comp/Coll, UIM/UM, Med pay, roadside assistance and tow... etc.

6 visits to the DMV, that was it? Try that in Puerto Rico, took me almost a year. I know the feeling ,though. When you walk out of that office with title in hand , makes you feel like a David just beating Goliath. Glad you got your truck on the road!

Has anything regarding this changed recently? My mini truck has been hanging out around the farm the last several years and I'm trying to get him back on the road. All of the insurance companies I've interfaced with are throwing a fit that its titled as an ATV and not a regular vehicle. And I'm seeing several postings on other websites not consistent with the info at the beginning of this thread. Like this one Mini Trucks to the USA — Minitrucks.net or this one Here's the skinny on Mini Truck legalities in each State - The Fast Lane Truck (tfltruck.com)

    Thanks!

Just to update this old thread. I live in AZ. Just had my 1998 Subaru Sambar dump truck registered as a completely normal vehicle, not an ATV/UTV.

I went to the DMV, gave them my title/registration paperwork and the paperwork in the file I received with the purchase from my dealer (I was missing a bill of sale from the Japanese owner to the dealer I bought it from, that was it). They told me everything was in order, and that it needed to pass emissions. I asked if there was a way around that. They said, yes, if I insured it as antique/classic/collectible car. This is not a daily driver for me, so I called my insurance agent (Jason Earl - State Farm - I highly recommend). He asked a few question about my intended use of the vehicle, and indeed, it met the antique definition. I scheduled an appt to return with the truck. Came back, showed them the bill of sale from Japan to my dealer, showed them my insurance certificate that indicated antique car, did my level 1 inspection, and in about 20 min, I was done, with a truck titled and temp license plate (I ordered a personalized plate). I was also able to keep the original Japanese export certificate, which I plan on framing because it looks really cool.

Now, if you were to daily driver this, no problem, just have to deal with emissions. I wasn’t sure in its current state that it would pass, so I just got the different insurance, which just allows for use a limited amount of miles/year. In the future, I plan on having this be more of a farm/ranch truck anyway, but in the meantime, I wanted to be able to drive it on the road when necessary. Once I get things cleaned up and rebuilt some, I may do an emissions test just to see what it says, but for now, I’m registered, legal, and very happy.

In summary, the documents I needed to register it as a normal vehicle:

Export Certificate (title) with English translation copy
Bill of sale from Japanese owner (as indicated on the export certificate/title) to the person/dealer in the USA that purchased it
Bill of sale from my USA dealer to me (if you were not the one that imported it directly in the first place)
Copy of insurance card (classic/collectible - no emissions; regular insurance - emissions needed)

Level 1 inspection was performed (verifying chassis number with paperwork)

Besides the above paperwork, I brought with me the customs papers, the EPA paperwork, and everything else the dealer provided me, but it didn’t seem like anything else was needed. Hope that helps!
