After reading about small speakers being the only option, I was determined to get something larger into the doors of my truck with more of a factory look. Well I started out with a pair of Kenwood KFC-1665S, 6.5" 2 way speakers. The depth did not appear to be an issue where I installed them and ended up with pretty good sound.

Chose my spot on the lower door and centered, marked the mounting holed and speaker hole. I used a Sharpie and could not get the ink off, so use something that wont be permanent.

I ran wires to these speakers that I had laying around 22 Ga. I actually ran 4 wires, just in case these speakers wouldn't live up to what I wanted and could add some 4" in the other part of the door in needed. I used somed 1/4" corrugated wire protector and soldered and heat shrinked all the wire connections. I also continued the corrugated wire cover through the plug on door to the outside and back in the plug on the body sill and fed the wire with cover to behind the radio area.

Next the dry fit of the speaker. The speaker fit the hole and mount screw holes fine, but once tightened the 3 higher spots at the top and LT lower and RT lower hit the edges first, if yo continue to tighten you will bent the outside rim, which obviousely we do not want to do. since there is a minimal amount of spece where the rest of the speaker does not cont act the door, I used some weather strip foam tape I had laying around to surround the perimeter of the hole to fill in any gaps between the speaker and door.

Then the key to getting the grille down against the door is to trim the three spots where the grille contacts the door to allow the grille to get closer. I simply marked these higher spots with a sharpie and used my utility knife to trim away the areas marked. I did a couple of test fits to unsure I was trimming enough and in the right spots.

Got it all together and looks great!, connected to the head unit and I have some pretty good sound now in my truck. And the speakers look great.
