Hi I have a 1998 Suzuki Carry. For the first drive of the day it starts right up and runs like a champ. Then about 20-30 minutes later all of a sudden it loses power and the idle starts surging and if you press the gas it dies instantly. Only option is to wait about 4-6 hours until the truck is completely cooled off and then it runs well again and the cycle repeats. See the link for video of the carburetor during this rough idle period where if I press the gas the engine dies. I also attached a picture of part of the vacuum system. If someone could tell me what the name of the valve circled in red is that would be great. I need to order a new one, I just don't know what to call it. Thanks in advance

VIDEO HERE - Notice the vacuum pump thing surging near the carburetor (might be a clue)

VSV(Vacuum Switching Valve) is the name of the circled part. In the vid it seems to be running very lean as if the gas supply is restricted. The Vacuum chamber surging in the vid is reacting normally to the rise & fall of vacuum in the manifold as it nearly dies & recovers. It doesn't seem to be venting the fuel system as needed and this would cause it to run lean. The next time it starts to happen, quickly loosen the gas cap to vent the tank and see if it will help.

Ok will do. I did open the gas cap today at some point when was trying to diagnose it. It did not solve the problem. I do believe it is a fuel issue also though. Any chance that a intermittent fuel pump could do this? Say it works well then it gets hot and quits working?

Your thought on the pump is a very good possibility, the way it is surging is a classic sign of running lean. Do you have a spare pump that you could plumb temporarily in-line? Another thought is that the filter may be so clogged it is making the pump work too hard but that it may still allow some fuel to pass through it. You probably have a sock filter at the intake of the pump pickup in the tank which could be crusted & clogged. You can buy the little universal pumps for not too many $ and keep as a backup, they are also handy to have for diagnostic purposes. Back when I lived in the states I always had a couple extra elec pumps both jerk & rotary around for my different projects.

Thinking also about the pic you posted, is there a possibility that that broken VSV may have to do with the purge or venting system?

Had this issue before. It turned out to be a dirty filter thas developed "varnish". It was clogged that even if I blow air almost no air exits on the other side..

Ok thank you guys. I'll try to isolate parts in the fuel system. I have a feeling clogged filter and or pump is going to be the answer.
