2005 HA6 Acty 'Yuki'

We purchased our Acty 'Yuki' in a sorry state, according to the previous owner it had been used as an advertising vehicle with a sandwich board on the truckbed and as such was left in a field.

Heavily vandalized by youth and driven into by farm vehicles it was then saved by the previous owner who got new windows and had the panels done up by a supposed BMW bodyshop professional. (looooots of filler was used and then it received the worst sprayjob/brush job ever.) When we testdrove it we found it to be 100% technically having only done very few miles, so we took the plunge knowing it would need a lot of TLC.

We have another kei car as well going the full oe spec on that, but considering the condition of the Acty we figured it to be justified to get a little creative modifying it (probably considered very mild on these forums :D).

Pictures we received from the previous owner:

Once in our possession, 1st thing we did was give Yuki a full service for a clean bill of health and he's been in service since never missing a beat. Whilst finishing another project we started planning how to tackle this one.
in the meantime Yuki's given quite a few bikes a ride:

Then the tires were completely dried out so it was time for some new shoes, I gave an old set of mazda mx5 daisy wheels a spruce up, used a flapwheel to get the centre hole to Honda Acty size and had new 155/55/r14 rubber fitted

spraying colour (I had this rattlecan with dark grey metallic in my possession for at least 5 years  luckily the one can was just enough so I didn't have to go out and hunt for another one)
    After spraying clear
    [IMG]
    all done

Now the real fun begins, finally the container from Japan arrived with Yuki's new bits (Yuki's hybrid Honda brother helped out too, collecting all the parts from the warehouse).

The panels that were clumsily repaired before are in my opinion really not worth it to put any more time and effort in so we decided to replace them with second hand panels, most are from the van version, the honda vamos, with a bit more luxury such as electric windows, window visors and nicer door cards with actual fabric, vamos fenders, bonnet, late model vamos front bumper with chrome grille and fog lights, vamos side skirts, and some other bits. All stuffed in our tiny council garage.

Up next is to attack rust, we've done a thorough check and there's nothing serious to be found, no rot anywhere, but surface rust is very present so best tackle it now and be done with it :)

Operation get rid of all the starting rust is now well under way, I have a week off now and plan to do most of the work in that time. For the most part it's getting rid of what the previous owner had done, just paint over the rust o_O which now makes it look worse and a lot more work getting rid of thickly brushed on paint everywhere:mad:.

For all the cleared metal we're going to use the 3-step system of POR15; clean it, prep it, coat it and after that POR15 bed liner for the truck bed and the original Honda trafetta white for the cabin, under the 'frunk' (not sure what to call it...) and we have bought some white and black stonechip to rustproof Yuki further for the coming years. I also realise it's not going to be perfect, but Yuki's a workhorse after all:p

Stripping the front panels off and Oooof... looks so bad, there was still glass everywhere from the broken windshield and loads of dust from sanded filler, note the overspray on the AC condenser, a nice honda H.

Here you can also see how bad of a job they did on painting the doors.

We only have a council garage atm so it's a little cramped and there's no power, so we're using a 1500w converter and ran that of Yuki's own battery with the engine running, unfortunately that's how we found that the radiator had been repaired with some kind of glue on the plastic end tank, probably after Yuki had been hit by a tractor :(, coolant level was still ok but now it starts leaking after the engine gets up to temperature, so I ordered a new radiator, and whilst at it also 'Spiegel' black vinyl seat covers and acty specific floor mats.

Applied the POR15 yesterday, it lays really flat and is very glossy. I think it looks pretty good and may leave it exposed under the bonnet as it doesn't need a topcoat as long as it doesn't get exposed to the sun too much.

Looking very good, nice rescue. Those wheels came out great.

Thanks, we thought it would've been a shame to see it ending up on the scrapheap, it should be a fun looking pickup once we're done. Still looking for some small centre caps for the mx5 wheels.

Today we did some more preperations for paint, transfered the locks from the old to the new doors, tested the electric windows and central locking actuators, all works. And testfitted the new/2nd hand Vamos bumper/grille/bonnet.

Wow, nice saving of the car. That with the POR15 looks good, have to try that on my Honda too on some spots.

Yeah that's really good stuff... couldn't find it over here until recently. Use the Metal Ready first on any crust and then the paint, works a charm.

I've used it on my honda beat before which is still holding up really well which made me decide to use it on the Acty.

Indeed you need to closely follow the steps as indicated on the packaging, get rid of loose rust, marine clean, metal prep, and only then the actual por15.

I can only work on Yuki in the weekends so the project is progressing a lot slower now, applied the bed-liner today, pic below is of the first layer still wet.

All the paintwork is finished (except for the front bumper) so we're slowly starting to re assemble Yuki. This weekend we fitted the Vamos doors, bonnet and brand new frp rear fenders. The front fenders have to wait until we get the wiring for the electric windows and central locking sorted.

the radiator arrived from the land of the rising sun. it fit fine on all the mounting points on the car, but for some reason the electric fan didn't line up right, must've chosen the wrong radiator model, fixed that with a strip of aluminium and yea... some more before/after pics [IMG]

Stripped interior sligtly, seats and carpets out, cleaed all the dirt and glass that was still left, treated rust and painted. We'll use te oe rubber carpet as a template to create new.

    Looking very nice.

A thought: sneak a pair of rubber grommets into the mounting holes of those upper fan mount ears? Almost looks like the holes are sized for 'em, and might prevent excess vibes/noise.

That's a great tip Ronin, will definitely do that

This weekend we spend time working on the wiring. Done so far:
-For the doors we only had the original female connectors so we got some fancy automotive waterproof connectors for that with enough pins for the speakers, central locking actuators and electric windows.
-Fitted the fenders with new LED indicators and wired those in
-Created a loom for the new fog lights and recovery led beacons in the front bumper.
-Positioned and wired in a cute little 100w amplifier for the door speakers
-Started wiring in an alarm system that will also operate the central locking actuators that came with the Vamos doors
-Started creating relayed interior loom for the electric windows.

This weekend we did more wiring stuff and I sprayed the silver vamos bumper, fitted some mesh for the bumper's radiator hole and vents + applied yellow foil on the new fog lights.

outside is nearly complete, just need to adjust the bonnet and find something to cover the H logo holes on it + vamos sideskirts. And clean/polish the dropsides. Then finish electronics and put all of the interior back in.

The interior is in and we took Yuki for it's first ride since after the make-over, it feels different and there is a lot less interior noise and no more rattles. We also added an amature radio + antenna. Mot is coming up end of the month.

Yuki now has to share the garage with the newest member of our little Honda family, my vfr800fi.

Weird! They were up less than 24 hours ago. They were really good pictures too - showing the transformation from a neglected kei to an awesome mini truck.

now most of them work again, uploaded on photobucket, they changed their system to paid membership, maybe because of that. Better you download the pics if they are useful for you for future repairs.
