I've got a 1988 Daihatsu Hijet. It has a carbureted 550cc 3 cylinder. 4 speed transmission. Engine has been having so many problem. I'd like to do a relatively easy swap. Does anyone know if any engine (preferably from a car that is sold in the US) will bolt up to the 4 speed tranny? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks
It was not on fire, however, I'd like to get rid of the weak engine for something stronger potentially and not so hard to get parts. What about adapter plates, are any made for these transmissions so they can be bolted up to a different engine?
I've been looking in to this also. I have 2 trucks which are running but parts are pricey. I am going to buy a suzuki 1.0l engine, it is the best fit I've been able to source. You could bolt this engine to a samurai 5 speed less the transfer and the ratio seems to be perfect but you would have invent a shifter mechanism and clock the motor to 70 degrees and mod it to work at that angle. I am going to see if I can bolt the suzuki to the stock Daihatsu 4spd. I think the Daihatsus used the 4spd behind their 1.0l engines so they should hold up. If the zuk can be adapted I will post a write up on the mod.
I'm in the same boat . I love my 95 hijet but parts are just to far away and just not enough power. I bought a 02 tracker with a 2.0L automatic. My planis to swap the complete drivetrain in. I've Been working on narrowing the housings first. I will be mounting the enginge just behind the cab sticking up through the box and may have to lengthen the truck by a foot. Maybe just the .wheel base. The goal is to be able to drive this at highway speeds with ease and the ability to get parts locally.
Sounds like overkill, I love it! I am pretty sure you could clock the engine at 70 degrees and put it in the stock location. I think mo one has tried it, which makes swapping an engine on one of these vehicles difficult and ugly. Got a pic of that tranny?
i often wonder how much going to a 993 would make to my hijet but not like I can find a engine on the east coast of canada.
