ive searched all the forums and watched some videos and i still cant get my s80 to idle. I cant figure this thing out. Carbs clean, fuel systems clean, good timing, choke adjustment is very close, 4 1/2 out on my air to start, vacuum lines look good. Im lost, about ready to push it out in the weeds and let it die. Can anyone help me?

It runs and drives fine but wont idle. High idle is screaming but once it kicks off it wont idle unless its around 1600rpm. Any less than that it will die.

sounds like a valve issue, these finicky engines need to be in sync. Small job. remove your valve cover and adjust. I can't hurt and at least you can cross that off. Not to state the obvious but your wires and rotor are in good shape right \?

Yes new wires plugs cap etc. and idea what the clearances are to be set at?

There should be a 'high idle' screw and a 'low idle' screw, make sure they're both dialed in.

Don't have the valve clearances for that one on hand either but intake 0.08mm/exhaust 0.12mm is pretty common/reasonable on kei engines, be a good place to start.

Also check timing, and that plethora of evil ready-to-leak vacuum lines that lurk waiting to cause havoc can seem good at first glance; second and third glances also highly recommended. Especially at the ends where they plug onto the nipples, once they get hard from age they can leak there with no external clues apparent.

Will that carb work ronin? I actually emailed back and forth with him today. I just want 100% sure it will work, other than ill need to have a manual choke now.

I wouldn't be absolutely certain either, especially at this distance... I guess if I were you I'd get your current one off so I could eyeball it real good against the ebay pics. And yeah, try and confirm with the seller too.

That's a great price if that one posted above off eBay will work. I spent more than that on the carb rebuild kit. I suspect my carb has similar issues to yours.
When I got it, there was some kind of manual choke lever setup in it & also the coolant lines going through the carb were capped off. So it basically is always on high idle since no coolant ever heats the wax pellet. I've got it where it will run & stay running but always high idle. Now that I've rebuilt the carb I plan to try setting up the carb coolant lines & see if I can get it working right!
So with yours once the engine warms up & idles down then it won't stay running?

Mine was running high all the time, could never get it to idle under 1300 rpm. I was going to put a new carb kit in it and the jets are stripped off inside and a huge chunk of the case is broke.

Ahh...that sucks! If I could have found one for that price, I probably would have replaced instead of rebuilt. Good Luck!

Ok boys and girls i got the new ebay carb yesterday. It looks good however there is no coolant ports on the new carb. So i guess my question is do i really need a carb thats cooled? Or can i just loop the lines?

I would just loop them and depending on where you are either figure out a manual choke or not. I'm in Southern Calif. and don't need it and don't have it.Mine was rebuilt by someone before I got it and he by passed the choke and it's never been a problem, truck runs fine and gets around 30 mpg around town so good enough for me.

Well i through it on quick and just blocked off the coolant hoses quick. Then it fired right up and it would idle! Alot better than my origional carb. This new carb is also a manual choke.

I think you should loop the coolant hoses rather than block it off. There may be a need for coolant flow though that particular area where the other ends of the carb hoses terminate.

Yes i will loop the hoses, just didnt have the right fitting on hand. Just blocked them to hear it run for a minute

Well the new ebay carb works! The only difference is theres no cooling ports on the new carb. Its runs and idles great. Now i just have to figure out my cooling problem. Im thinking my water pump may be out. I can take the upper radiator hose off and block it with my finger with little pressure. There is also no t stat installed.
