What just happened?

Discussion in 'Daihatsu Hi jet' started by Old Ironsights, Mar 5, 2016.

  1. Drove 1/4 way to work today (2mi), had to wait for the boss to arrive/open the cow gate.

Was idling for a couple of minutes and it suddenly started idling rough.

I shut it (94 Truck) off and restarted. It started immediately, but still ran rough.

Drove into the Yard, shut down, and got my morning paperwork.

Started right back up (1/2 second key) but was still rough.

Got onto the hwy where I've been running 8mi to the work site @ 90-105 without a hiccup, but was now jerking and coasting to a max of 80.

After work, it cold-started instantly... but still idled rough.

Had to run in 4th at 80 (hard pressed to get there) all the way back into town (10mi).

Dropped 1/4 tank of petrol in 20mi.

When I got home to listen, I hear a "tack" (middle octave metallic click between "tic" and "toc") that, at idle hits about 5xSec.

Exhaust doesn't smell rich, and on accel the motor winds up OK... Though it sounds more like a lawn mower now than it did yesterday.

I'm going to pretend I know what I'm doing and try stuff tomorrow.

I have just enough metric tools to turn my truck into a pile of unrecognizable pieces and zero understanding of what they do.

    All hints will be helpful.

If you haven't got it figured yet, and I had to take a guess, I'd say it's vacuum leak. Or it Could be something up with the carb ~choke stuck on? There's not much to go on.

  3. Not much to go on because I'm an incompetent gear crank. I do 1911s, not S110Ps.

Turns out to have been a bad Spark Wire. Ordered an S110P "tuneup kit" and had it installed... except it had the wrong dist cap. Rotor was OK, and the tech went with it, but now I have a brand new useless cap... and should get the correct one.

I also am concerned about the timing belt. It's got 60K on it. That OK? Should I have it replaced yesterday?

I just don't get this stuff.

old ironsights you should replace the timing belt soon, I bought my 87 hijet really cheep because the guy was driving it home and the belt broke teeth and slipped timing and bent every value, it was not a fun task by any means so if I were you I'd get it soon just to be safe

  5. How many KM on yours?

Mine is just under 60k. I worry about the timing belt but the only thing I know about them is that non-interference = good and interference = $$$

Mine has like 48287 or something but ya I think it's an interference moter is what they are called and if the belt dose break or skip I had the potential to have the Pistons come up and bend the vavles or potential to mess up your Pistons as well. I don't know where you would get your parts but the place I ordered was from Yokohama motors and I ordered all of my pets through them and it was not to expensive. Hope I helped a little.
