1991 Hijet S83P needs radio & speakers

    Hello all,
I've been eyeballing these mini trucks for a few years now and finally found one local to me in west-central Ohio. So I'm the proud new owner of what I gather is a '91ish Daihatsu Hijet. The stamp in the body says S83P and the seat belt tags read '90 and I understand these were made from 91-93 so I call it a 91.

Anyway, i gotta have a radio and speakers. The factory radio is in the dash now and I think I measured 3-3/4" deep (I'm not at home right now where the truck is). I was looking at a nice JVC "mech-less digital media receiver" on Crutchfield's website but it and others are 4" or deeper.
What aftermarket receivers are you guys using or how much modifying do you need to do to get a good fit? I've searched here, on google, youtube etc and haven't found what I need.
I only need FM radio & USB but SD would be nice. I'd like to run little speakers in the lower door panels or maybe I'll just build a little carpeted box on the front center hump.
Thanks & Let me know your thoughts!

    Hello Lance and welcome aboard!

Do you have a complete chassis number? Probably stamped under the seat and will start S83P-xxxxxx. If so, run it through http://jpcenter.ru/month and get the exact build date.

Here is my post on my radio install:

Doesn't look like the pics are working but I believe I read Kevin was in the process of moving them over after upgrading the forum site.

A Toyota pigtail from Wal-Mart should fit your truck when you go to tie your new radio in to your factory wiring harness. My truck had factory speakers (Panasonic) in the door. Very shallow. Haven't had much luck finding better speakers that are that shallow. I believe most guys are putting aftermarket speakers in the doors and are making a "spacer" to push it away from the door slightly so you won't have clearance issues inside the door with the window and regulator.

Best of luck and keep us posted!

I'll get the number when I get home and look it up. Thanks for the welcome and thanks for this info!
Crutchfield has a set of kenwood 5-1/4" speakers for $40 and they are just under 1-3/4" deep. Seems I had 2-1/2" in that lower part of the door below the lowered window.

I installed one of the JVC "mech.less" decks in my 92 and have been pretty happy with it so far... It is a tad too deep for the S83P dash cavity, but if you paint the mounting sleeve with some flat black paint and dont push it all the way into the dash bezel, it fits fairly well and doesnt look too shabby... Originally, I had installed a Clarion FZ-150 that DOES fit all the way in, but I wasnt happy with the ipod or SD card interface. (It is now sitting in a box in my shed) As far as speakers, the Kicker 6.5" CS series speakers fit well and dont hit the windows. My door panels didnt have the speaker holes cut out and were in poor condition, so I just used the original door panels as templates and cut new ones. The original panels have cuts in them for speakers, but I dont think they will accept a 6.5" speakers without additional trimming. For the radio, you'll need to cut a DIN sized opening which is close to the OEM marks on the dash bezel. Mine did not have a Toyota style plug for the radio, so I had to hardwire it and run new speaker wires into the doors. Also, there is no constant 12V feed to the OEM radio, so you'll have to run one either directly to the battery, or to the main ignition harness or you will not have any memory on the radio and it will reset every time you turn off the ignition. All in all, its a pretty easy job, but then again, I'm a professional installer, so...

Hey Aaron, thanks for the insight and info. Do you know which JVC unit you have and would you be able to post a picture of how you are saying your radio barely sticks out of the dash? As for the door speakers, have you had any trouble with the speaker wire failing in the hinge of the door? This is why i was thinking about building a little box on the center hump that would hold whatever size head unit, and any speakers.

Ill try to get you some photos tomorrow, my truck is out in the shed, and theres no light out there now. As far as the speaker wire is concerned, I ran the wires out the front of the truck by the headlights and back through the doors through oem holes and covered the wite in split loom, so they're good to go. The model# of the head unit I installed is the JVC KD-X310BT.

Sorry it took me a while to take the photos, and then even longer to figure out how to resize them so I could upload them...

  9. Hey Aaron. Thanks for the writeup.

My '94 S110P had an old Clarion AM only, full digital/ unit that has a DIN plug. I can tell which wires go to the lone speaker, but did have constant 12v for the memory. My problem is figuring out which of the remaining 5 wires powers what.

I have a mechess deck that fits quite nicely, and a plan for speaker mounting, but without knowing what to wire to the deck's plug to keep from burning it up...

Wiring info for these trucks seems to be a little hit or miss, so I would recommend using a multimeter to find your accessory and ground wires... There may also be an illumination wire in the factory loom to control the OEM radio lighting. Be careful when testing to not confuse this wire with either your accessory or ground wires as it may test like the accessory or ground until you turn the lights on... Test your wires with the headlights both on and off to ensure you have the correct wire. Also, I'm not sure if the S110 has a "dimmer" switch for the dash lights, but if it does, make sure to test your wires while moving that switch (with the headlights on) to make sure you don't accidentally use that as an accessory or ground wire.

  11. Thanks. Found one that helped a lot.

    Here's the old deck:

I found the pin-outs here: http://www.tehnomagazin.com/Auto-radio-car-connector/DAIHATSU-Car-Radio-Wiring-Connector.htm Page 1, first diagram, matched the Clarion.

    Here's what I installed:

    It's a "Boss" 612UA zero mech 200w 4 channel AM/FM/(MP3) SD/USB/Aux with RCA preamp outs.
$30US at Amazon. (What it DOESN'T have is a clock. WTF, over?)

It fit almost exactly into the rear DIN mount for the Clarion. I had to do some minor tweaks and drill a couple of screw holes in the OEM mount, but it slipped right in with only the barest of protrusion - covered by the included bezel. I WANTED to put the tray above the deck, but altering the mounts would have been a bugger.

Speakers (surface mount Boss 3-way box - see footwell on left of pic - also about $30US) work, but are a bit of a muddle at the mo. I have the wires handy and will get them sorted shortly. Planning on screwing them into the tunnel hump between the shifter & firewall. Someday I'll get some door mounted speakers, but that will require cutouts - which I don't have or am capable of doing. (No garage, few tools, fewer mechanical skills...)

I have the Clarion as well. Not happy with it AT ALL! The volume knob has gone almost completely out where when I turn it the volume goes all over the place...usually all the way down. I have to push and spin the knob to get it to move. The same with trying to adjust the settings. Bass/treble/fade/balance is all adjusted by the knob. It is a PITA to try to move the settings. It is a good unit at first and provides plenty of sound, but beware the downfalls...it's a matter of time before the knob goes out. I have mine set at a decent volume and dare anyone to touch it when they get in. For me, if I want music, it's only on and off...I DO NOT try to adjust the volume. I will be going to a different unit soon.
