What a strange yoke setup to not have it retained. I guess if that's the way it was set up though, hopefully it's good!

Yeah it's weird, but then again almost every 2 wheel drive car on the planet uses this design, even our Daihatsus, if you unbolt your rear companion flange the shaft will just slide off the tail shaft and out, same thing just a smaller output shaft and it's not made to move on the output shaft like normal. On the trikes they use the same shaft like I just made except it has a locking collar on the center to lock it down after its telescoped into place, the trikes have no swing arm they are independent suspension so the driveshaft never travels up and down nor does the length change at all. I'm thinking about using a set key to lock the yoke to the output shaft.

I'm highly familiar with typical slip yokes, but a double slip shaft is just weird :)

If it were me, I'd only be happy if that other yoke was locked in place or there was a spring of some sort in the shaft's slip.

Yeah it will be one way or the other, leaning towards the Allen key set screw method, it will be the easiest way to secure it, the spring will be a backup but I don't see the set screw failing, that's how the agricultural shafts are done.

Installed the 2 set keys in the yoke and it looks like it worked well. image.jpg image.jpg

Got to drive the van tonight, brakes are still a little spongy but its driveable and reliable now.

I don't know if I can get over that electric reverse but that motor sure seems nice. I can't wait to pick a swap for mine and get under way.

The reverse is more of a novelty to me, it works, but I will rarely park in a situation that it is needed. If you need a better reverse just use a gas golf cart starter generator mated via v-belt to a pulley on the rear drive shaft yoke, it can charge the battery when driving and reverse pretty quick when needed, I've seen other guys use this setup and it works well. In the video you can see me use reverse for a second to get off of my parking chok (2x4) with no effort.

Wow! Just saw your vid. That motor sounds awesome. By the sound of the motor it looks like the rpm's are smack on the money. It sounds like you hit the sweet spot with the diff gear ratio.

Yeah the rpms are perfect, ive been putting together the front brake system and thats almost done, im going with 1979-80 first gen Mazda RX7 front discs, they share the same outer race and i made a bushing for the inner race to use the daihatsu bearings. Now to get the calipers and use the brackets you provided me. Shouldnt be to much longer, ive been up to my ears in projects, just bought a 13 ft boston whaler with a direct injection 40 hp e-tec that ive been getting ready for the water, as well as the house remodeling..... It never ends....

Coming along real nice. Talking about projects and setbacks, I am also remodeling a bathroom, rebuilt a subaru turbo engine, bought another subaru, fixing a jeep patriot and to top it all off I still don't have my plates plus I was in the hospital for 5 days. Life is unpredictable.

No not really, just been driving the crap out of it, have over a 1000 miles on it since its been back on the road. Still need to complete the front brakes but I'm waiting for a little bit more money first. I don't want it to be down for to long due to lack of funds. It's a blast to drive, I still have to get a new oxygen sensor for the left side, it's throwing that code and that sides exhaust is black and sooty in the pipe. How are your minis doing, any plates yet?

Sad to say, no plates. The last straw will be next Wednesday when i meet up with the new guy in charge, I'll keep you posted, ridiculous. I am going to see a vintage Sambar which has plates, a weird LHD 60's model that I stumbled across. I want something I can actually drive around!
Glad to hear you got yours going. must be fun as hell to drive.

That Sambar sounds cool, make sure you post some pics of it, I love the older stuff. Good luck on wed.

I posted this pic under 69 sambar? in the sambar section cuz I really can't identify it. Looks like a 1st gen with 2nd gen turn signals, it has me baffled.

That looks like a 61-66 sambar first gen, 360 cc engine 3 speed. You are right the blinkers are not correct, maybe a late year change or for a different market? Cool van! Is it for sale?

Yeah, it is. Your description is what I think it is also plus it's LHD. I am going to see it on Monday.

BTW, the front vent is not in the right position as all the others I've been able to find on the 'net. From what I've been able to find, the vent should be alot higher for the first gen 360 and a little above the bumper for the 450. Strange indeed.

Oops, got that mixed up. 450- vent up high near the windshield 360- closer to the bumper. That front end doesn't look as slanted as a front gen should be, maybe has some type of conversion? Who knows. Will know for sure when I see it up close.

I will be in your neck of the woods in a couple of weeks to help my folks out since my dad just had open heart surgery this week... Naturally I trolled around Craigslist in the area for mini truck and FJ items and came across your van! Very tempting, but I think the wife would kill me if I attempted to buy it and drive it back to Illinois! Looks like somebody will be getting a hell of a deal on a cool little rig. Why did you decide to sell?

I changed jobs and I haven't been driving at all for the last two months, I bought s Tundra and plan on buying a big boat to go river camping, selling it for extra cash for the boat purchase, also selling my 13 ft Boston whaler too,
