Nice, dana 44 I presume? I just finished fixing my other Hijet rear axle which had a 4x4 tube welded on in place of the leaf spring! FYI the springs off the rear of a samurai fit perfect. Oh, when you work on the front calipers, they are for the mirage 2 door. The 4 door will not fit the adapter. Good news, I will getting plates for my trucks soon, I have been working hard on getting my second truck for inspection.

Thanks again for the insight on the brakes, I'm glad you are getting the plate issue taken care of, and yes it's a Dana 44 out of a 73-75 jeep cj5 (short track) same exact width as the stock axle. It's a 3.73

I got the exhaust mocked up today, still need to mount the mufflers but this gives you an idea of the sound. The mufflers are form a late model Harley Davidson FLH.

Thanks Tony, it's cool to get some good feedback from people, this project has been a bit of work but it's also be pretty fun. I just got the exhaust mounted and done today.

That sounds great. I have a Kazuma side by side with a seized engine. I have been thinking motorcycle engine. now I know it's going to happen. Thanks for sharing your build.

You do realize that this has made me green with envy.

Tony, that sounds like it will be a cool project, make sure you post pics. Mad, you cant be to envious, you have 2 street legal trucks to do what you want with!
Im pretty happy with the sound, and should have he rest of the little stuff done in a week or so, then it will be my daily driver again.

Unfortunately I hit a snag, they did not give me the plates after all was paid and done. Still fighting this, still envious.

Well I hope it all goes well, would suck to get denied or only get low speed vehicle plates. How easy is it to bring cars from the states over there? I ask because you could possibly get the titles done over here and then once you get them in hand its just a matter of registering them. Most states here don't do inspections, they just give you the plate and say goodbye. There is a title company I know of that can title anything, they are in Miami, Title King.

Great idea but I have already handed over all the documents and all is paid for. There seems to be an internal 'show of force' between who approved it and who inspected it, very stupid. Hopefully I will get a call this week as I talked directly to the Director, said he'd fix this. Meantime I get to hear the rumble of your van while I keep working on one of the trucks. FYI, instead of fixing the roof on one of the trucks, I cut a big hole and making a ragtop for it. I'll let you know how that goes.

That is one big a** axle for a kei truck. Nicely done.

Mad I hope they don't give you crap about the ragtop for any "safety" reason, I saw a van on Craigslist similar to mine but the whole top was cut out and rag topped, they used it as an ambulance at a race track, pretty cool.

Anne, it may be a bit bigger , but it was about all I could find without having to cut down a smaller axel, it would have only saved weight and added more cost, i must admit, if I didn't put the thing in there myself I wouldn't know the "diff", pun intended lol.

Trucks were already inspected before I decided to cut the roof, so no problem there. The roof was actually pretty week if you ask me, it is stronger now as I added a 'beam' on the inside.
Have you done a test drive with the new axle yet?

No test drive yet, just waiting on the drive shaft, another week or so till its done. Looks like you guys will have a hurricane on top of you by Tuesday, any signs of preparation yet?

Should work out great with the new gear ratio. as far as the hurricane, we are prepared all year round. Water supply, generator, food, etc. We'll survive. As long as you got a cement house, you'll make it.

Yeah we generally get your leftovers of storms, we stay somewhat prepared as well.
I'm pretty sure the gear ratio difference will be night and day, I hate having to wait but that's how it goes.

Well, Danny grew tired and did nothing but a little rain. Erika, on the other hand, looks like she will do some damage. Just reparked my kei trucks and doing a little prep for this storm. The leftovers are probably going your way, put away the van, don't want the winds to take her away.

Yeah I'm pushing my wife's gym equipment to the side and the van will be in the garage, shouldn't be to much of a storm but you never know. Get some much needed insurance money back into the economy.
Just talked to the driveshaft guy today, he got the parts in and is making the youke today, should have it next week sometime.

Dying to see it move. Working on the ragtop sliding mechanism, looking good so far. Erika will probably slow me down for the weekend, oh well.

Erika took a sudden detour, what a relief.

yeah we got less rain from that storm than any normal storm produces. Glad for all that it wasn't bigger or more organized.

Ok well today I finally got my "custom" yoke from the drive shaft shop, the guy gave me a story about how he was going to have to make it, bore and broach etc, fact is this thing smells of Chinese paint and by the scratches all over it, it was a shelf part sitting for some time. I swear, just tell me its a hard part to get and that it has to come from China or Japan, whatever, but don't tell me you made something custom and i can see the casting marks across where the work would have been done..... geez Anyway, I will be dropping the parts off to the shaft shop in the am.

methinks you got the cart ahead of the horse there. Don't you need a pinion nut in there at 350 foot pounds or so?

Rather annoying to have a captive yoke like that on the axle end instead of one with caps, too. At least I really doubt you'll ever have to replace that joint.

  30. Mkguyvr

No there's no pinion nut, the axle has a pinion nut on it but the yoke on the axle is one that has the 2 u bolts over the universal bearing caps, the other end (engine side) the new yoke that is black just slides onto the output shaft. Since the shaft is a two piece (splined for suspension travel) it telescopes in and out. The length its at right now only allows for a 1/4 of compression. On the Goldwing the stock shaft has a large spring that pushes forward on the shaft to keep it mated to the output shaft. As it sits I shouldn't have any problems with it but if I do I will shorten it and install a spring inside the telescoping splined part and it will keep forward pressure on the output shaft.
Well I put the shaft in and drove it around a bit just to get it moving, brakes are a little spongy so I still have some bleeding to do and I ordered a hydraulic E-brake for it so I will just wait until it is installed to bleed them. After that I will road test it and get rid of any minor bugs, then it will be time to tear down all of the fabricated pieces and paint them real quick with rattle cans and bolt everything back in and run it.
