Where to splice in for daytime running lights

    My '97 Carry dump has finally finished the long trans Pacific trek and I'm working on getting it ready for out of province inspection (I'm in BC).

    I've read numerous threads, both on these forums and elsewhere, that explain a variety of ways to hook up some drl. What they all seem to gloss over is where to splice into existing circuits.

    I'm planning on using my park lights as drl. I'm hoping to use the wiper circuit for an 'on' circuit to power the drl.

    What I don't understand is where to actually connect the two circuits. Behind the fuses? Should I splice right at the park light bulb?

    A second question, do I need to use a relay for this or can I direct wire the wiper circuit to the drl?

    Hopefully someone can help with this...

    I seem to have wired my ignition to my headlights...

    I used a fuse tap (the basic brass blade type) tied to the cold side of the wiper fuse and t-spliced that to the + wire of the left front park light. It works great, in the sense that the park lights all come on when the key is turned to "on". However, if I switch on the headlights (main or park) the engine stays on even if I remove the key... Whoops.

    This issue was mentioned in an old post from 2011, but there was no mention on how to fix it... Any ideas?

    put everything back to how it was before you started splicing. then hook up side lights to your cigarette lighter . 15 minutes and your done.

    Yea i was gonna say hook it to your radio/cigar. But there you have it.

    Dochockin, how did things work out for you with your daytime running lights (DRL). If you wouldn't mind explaining how you did it so that a four year old would understand, that would be awesome.

    I always like seeing a thread finish up with how things worked out. Now I'm just being selfish of courseMy mini arrives at the end of the month. I like your idea Tony! I'm guessing the cigarette lighters has constant power? Does this mean just splicing a wire to the positive side of the cigarette lighter? Does setting the daytime running lights up this way affect the high beams?

    Curious Dochockin, and I don't want to take this thread away from the topic you were asking about, but what other items did you need to take care of to get your truck registered in BC

    Hey mtslesse,

    I ended up doing something similar to what Tony suggested. I used a fuse tap to splice into the protected side of the cigarette lighter/radio fuse. I had to trim the end so it would fit in the fuse holder. I decided to do that for a speedy set up. It saved me needing to dismantle the console to access the back of the cigarette lighter.

    My Carry has the composite headlights, with park lights in them, so I spliced into the the hot wire, running through the passenger foot well, out to the left side park light. This one splice powered all of the park lights, front and back, to come on with ACC. The only disadvantage to this is that if you sit and listen to the radio... your lights are on. Considering my radio is Japanese and doesn't work here... oh well.

    If you have the round headlights, I'm not sure if you have park lights. In which case you may need to use a relay to power the low beams.

    My set up has no effect on my high beams.

    The other things I needed to do for inspection in BC were: Side reflectors (Front = Amber, Rear = Red). DOT tires. DOT headlights (the biggest headache for me with the composite headlights, super easy for the round lights). Side marker lights, I picked up 3/4" LED trailer lights at CrapTire (again Front = Amber, Rear = Red), I installed them in the sides of the truck and spliced them into the park light circuits so they come on with the DRLs.

    Once we get our vehicles registered, we should create a thread to help others, or use this one. I know each Province will be different, but at least we can help people from BC get the job done, or at least get a good idea of what they need to do.

    That does look great though! I wonder if the same marker lights could be attached to a front and rear bumper and still be accepted, or if the lights and reflectors need to be mounted directly to vehicle itself.

    Any other info on getting a carry through icbc for registration in BC would be great. I'm currently considering a suzuki that's in Alberta and anything that could help with the process would be nice.
    The seller said he could set up the dlr.
    What are DOT tires and headlights? I guess I'd have to get those or make sure it has them.
    It's a 2000 model too btw.
    Those side markers look simple enough.

    KNBC,

    What part of BC are you in? I'm in the Kootenays. I just brought a 2000 Suzuki Carry DB52T into BC, and had it registered. I'll help any way I can.

    The DOT tires is simply that they need to have the Department Of Transportations stamp of approval on them. For the most part any tire you buy in North America that are specific to road use will be DOT. You will see those exact letters on the sidewall of these tires. I ended up getting 13" black winter style wheels from Summit Racing ($39 each wheel, with the right back spacing), and 175/75R13 Hankook iPike Ice radials ($38 on sale at Canadian Tire!!).

    My lights were good enough for my inspection, and only needed the DRL module, which we did in a couple hours for about $50 in parts. You simply pop your lights off, and the adjustments for light direction are on the reverse side. So changing the angles is super easy and quick.

    The side markers on the front of the 2000 model Suzuki's light up with the DRL module, so you are good there, and I installed simple red reflective licence plate bolts, and square red reflectors (Canadian tire again) on the rear corners of the truck. That was it. I did a cooolant flush, and threw in a battery with higher cranking jam for the winter. The battery needed some quick and simple mods as the poles were very narrow on the stock Suzuki battery, but honest it was quick fix and the local car parts store had everything I needed for under $10 in parts to make it work.

    A quick note on the tire change, you will have to lightly trim the front bumper on the inside edge so that when you turn the wheels you won't rub. But it still looks fully stock, and I play in the mountains quite a bit and never touch with the light trim job. I used an razor blade that I lightly heated with a lighter, and it cut like butter. Go slowly, and you won't mess up.

    Good luck with everything!! I love this little vehicle. It honestly is the perfect little truck. And in the snow, it's incredible! I watch cars and trucks in my rearview mirror slide all over the place, and these little trucks just stick to the road!

    very happy for you mtslesse. I would'nt trade my mini in for anything. I don't drive any paved roads with mine but I love the way in handles the logging roads. for added traction I put chains on mine last winter. woo eehh!! Concerning your lights. I'm bringing in a Isuzu Bighorn/trooper. I thought we had to change the headlight lens to be compliant. Any tips would be appreciated

    Hi, I just imported a 95 DD51T. It has the rectangular headlights. I am in BC. As far as I can tell I need DOT or ECE headlights. Does anyone know where I can get some that would fit or some other way around the problem. Some other vehicle lights that I could retrofit?
