Question for the resident ACTY owners! 4x4

    Good evening all,

My minitruck experience is limited to that of my Hijet, but I'm curious as to the operation of the 4wd system in the Honda trucks, say early to mid 90's. I see the term "Real Time" pop up now and then.

I'm familiar with current day AWD systems on domestic vehicles. Most operate in RWD or FWD alone and engage the opposite axle to get all wheel speeds up to par. However, these often involve wheel speed sensors, ABS, traction control and all sorts of modules. I can't see the ACTY being that complicated.

Can the trucks be switched between 2 and 4wd? High / low?

Any knowledge from the ACTY experts is much appreciated! Thank you!

Honda's RealTime 4WD on the ACTY normally just drives the rear wheels until it detects slippage and then it sends some to the front. It does this with clutches, no wheel speed sensors. On some models there is a disconnect bolt mounted on the side of the transaxle that allows you to put it in rear wheel drive only. You have to climb under the truck to get to it.

The system works real good I've only been stuck one time and that was when I got it turned sideways on the side of the road plowing snow and two diagonal tires lost traction.

Thank you Machinist! I was hoping you'd chime in. I have a much clearer understanding now. Looks like a single speed transfer case.

I've always been a friend on anything that has "Honda" stamped on it.

I was curious awhile back about which HA4 ACTY trucks had the little shifter to drop out the front driveshaft so I went thru the parts diagrams and found that starting with chassis #2200001 they stopped using it.
