Potentially new problem?

After fussing around with my stereo harness today i discovered an issue, most likely its independent of the stereo install. After getting the stereo to work i took the rig (94' U42T) for a spin to make sure i wasnt missing something, low and behold the fan didnt work! So i pulled into the drive and just as i turned the truck off i heard the fan kick on???? Weird! SO i restarted the truck and the fan worked fine. Long story short i realized that if i turn the key all the way clockwise the fan doesnt work, BUT if i turn the key slightly back counterclockwise the fan comes on and all is well.... has anyone had this problem before or even heard of it happening before. More importantly is it a big problem?? Could it be a sign of problems to come?? Seems to me like there may be an issue with the ignition switch which kind of scares me. Thanks fellas!

Switch could be going bad. I was working on a beetle a few years ago that had a finicky key. It would only work in a certain spot and gradually got worse until I had to park on hills and push start.

It could be something else though. The wiring on these things is "different" lol.

Is it difficult to replace the switch? Sounds like it could be a bit of an issue....

The radiator fan or vent fan? I assumed vent fan initially.

I think the mits are pretty similar to the suzuki. I had to take the column casing off several times to remove the front of the dash for the defrost cable so I decided to not put it back on. The top I had to pull pretty good to get it off. Be careful it catches on the hazard button. The bottom will just come off if I remember right.

The site sponsors are pretty good at getting parts if you need anything. Stuff tends to be expensive. I would do some more testing before ordering anything. Or order and make sure they take returns? Some places don't take returns on electrical stuff.

You assumed correctly, its the vent fan that stops working. Not sure what to test, but im sure your right i should at the very least open up the column and see if there is anything obvious. But besides that i would know where to begin.... Perhaps for now i can at least find out what it would cost for a new one and who can get them.... either way thanks man!

I'd pull the ignition and clean it. You will be surprised how much metal shavings can fit in them then lube with graphite. The lube that is in there is probably old and sticky. That's what starts the problems. It gets sticky and doesn't allow the spring to fully return the key to the run position and causes little sparks on the contacts. Then the darn thing goes out. I've replaced a few due to old grease in the colomn
