    hey guys,

lookin to doing some body work to my 91 hijet. the tailgate and sides looks horrible with all the rust holes, so hopefully someone can give me some pointers and they can be salvaged.
Would my best bet be to sand it all down, bondo, primer and paint? Can this be a weekend project? I don't have access to a welder or anything either.
On a side note, does everyone else's truck get so dusty?! I'm wiping the inside down every few days cause of all the dust!

No.. you can not sand it and bondo it... if there are holes you need to cut and weld. Bondo will just allow it rust faster. You can try hit it with some rust neutralizer (even they they are a false sense of hope at best) fiber glass the hole then bondo to smooth it out...

I picked my welder up new for under 100 bucks.. its crappy but it does the job. The more I weld the better I get with a grinder.

My suzuki has the same problem with dust. It is the weatherstripping on the doors. It has chinsy plastic clip things that either break out of the door or rip through the weatherstrip. Then it gets slack and doesn't seal. I don't drive it much so it isn't fixed yet. I've been thinking of gluing it on. Need to do more research first.

If the bedsides are a cosmetic thing you can just take them off. Maybe use a cargo net or tie downs to hold what you need to. Or maybe build replacement sides out of 2x8s or whatever. These are just some low buck ideas.

There's a guy in San Diego that has a pile of new take off sides and tail gates. He has them listed on Craig's List in the farm and garden section.Shipping may be a problem though.

To save you cash and time.......grind or wire wheel the rust till its gone. Nice n shiny. Then use good silicone like 5200 and fill the holes. Then go to home depot and buy the rattle can spay on bed liner. Comes just like spray paint. And do the sides. Maybe the bottom of the doors. Ive done a pile of trucks this way. My 89 ford ranger is done exactly the same. Top to bottom. If it starts to come off I clean the spot real goid and spray on more hahaha. Costs 8 bucks a can up here in alaska and holds on threw all sorts of abuse

I was anxiously waiting for your thoughts on that spaner hahaha really does work well.......at least on the things I've opted that rout on. Usually mud trucks. Buggy's. Play rigs. I do like the zinc chromate though. Didn't know that one.
